Puritans sought to reform their Church of England, they wanted to rid the church of the practice of Catholicism. In 1630, Puritans set sail for America but did not break with the Church of England even though they were leaving to freely practice their religious beliefs. Their beliefs included some few chosen people that were called “the elect,” for salvation by God. If you were not part of the elect, you were condemned to eternal damnation. Nobody knew who was part of the elect or who was condemned, so everyone was extremely stressed and anxious all the time.

This image displays a woman being accused of witchcraft and being sentenced to prosecution. The accusations of witches first were those in poverty, but toward the end even those of upper class and liked by the town were accused. Some of the accused admitted to being involved in witchcraft, as they thought it would save them. Some died standing on their denial. Consequences for being deemed guilty included imprisonment and death (being hanged).

The Girls Who Accused

The girls who began accusing people of being witches were Ann Putnam Jr., Elizabeth Booth, Elizabeth Hubbard, Mary Warren, and Mercy Lewis. These girls first began this by throwing fits in their beds, acting possessed. Elizabeth Paris and Abigail Williams were the first girls to begin accusing. The first person accused was Tituba, the Native Indian slave who watched over them. The girls began screeching, had fevers, and shaped their body into abnormal curves to seem like there was something wrong.

The definition of McCarthyism in simple terms is the ability to make allegations without sufficient evidence. McCarthyism was also known as the second red scare. This idea of thinking gave people the opportunity to accuse someone of wrong doing without actually having any facts to back it up. McCarthyism is displayed during the witch trials as the girls didn't have any factual evidence to back up their claims. The girls were able to use their fits of acting possessed as "evidence" for their accusations.

John Calvin and Calvinism

John Calvin was a pastor and "influencer" of his time in the 1500s. John Calvin's ideology was built on the belief that God had a handful of chosen ones and everyone else was condemned. This was known as Calvinism, a system of beliefs that Puritans strictly believed. Calvinism is based around predestination, or the fact that God has already determined everyone's fate. This was also known as the grace of God.
