During chapter 25, Offered described how her conception of love before Gilead was. It appears that she has a strong condemn to how love affected negatively women. She expresses "Falling in love, we said, I fell for him. We were falling women." (page 225) This quote shows how Offred metaphorizes old love as a threat to women's stability, and directly critiques how gender roles do influence on love dynamics. A song lyric that connects to this conception of love is the song "liability" by Lorde, since it reflects how love can make women feel exposed and judged within their partners. Lorde similarly echoes Offreds idea of love destabilizing women's emotions. For instance, the line "They say, ‘You’re a little much for me’" shows how love meets expectations that often have to do with gender. Both female authors expose the idea that women are often portrayed as too emotional, and fall deeply into the feeling, to the point of it converting into a disadvantage.

Related to the theme of power and control. It represents the rules of Gilead being broken, however the lock was forced open (by Serena Joy), not by who was locked (Offred) in the rules of the system. This implies that even though rules were disobeyed, control is still not in the hands of the prisoner.

This connects to real life since people sometimes stand up for themselves in small, private ways instead of openly. In Chapter 31, Ofglen resists quietly by sharing information about Mayday. Ofglen, is quiet by trusting the right person.

"But she exists, in her white dress. She grows and lives. Isn't that a good thing? A blessing?" (pg. 228)

In the quote, Offred shows how growth can be both comforting and painful. Even though she misses her daughter, she feels relief knowing she is alive and growing. Watching a video of myself as a little kid laughing and playing with my dad creates a similar feeling. Growing up is beautiful, but it also means that a version of us is gone. Just like Offred, there is happiness in growth, but also a subtle sense of loss.

Gender inequality:

During chapter 35, there's a specific passage that talks about marriage between men and women. They specify how if the marriage doesn't work, it's most likely that the men would go away and look for his own satisfaction. It then clarified that it's a problem that involves both of them, they just needed to change their mindset or change the man.

The first image is how the things actually were; but Atwood uses language to change the perception and role of gender. This way the portrayal of gender inequality is seen all throughout the book.
