Obesity is a rising problem in our country as the obesity rates keep climbing at a deathly rate. Obesity is a problem in a lot of places but no places are anywhere near the rate of obesity in America. America has the worst obesity problem as more and more people are growing up obese and struggling to make any changes to their lifestyle. The way people eat in America with all the trans-fat and fast food establishments almost promotes living an unhealthy lifestyle that can and does lead to obesity for many. Children and teenagers are especially prone to adopting these habits which are proven to be very difficult to break and change, they may be influenced by all the advertisements and promotion these unhealthy products/foods receive. Even in grocery stores it seems to be difficult to find foods or snacks that are really healthy for you as companies can lie and manipulate their consumers to believe what they are eating is good for them. To add on to that the portions of foods in America are much larger than other countries leading to us eating more and becoming unhealthy. Obesity is one of the leading causes of death in America as more and more kids and adults are adopting this awful lifestyle.

Obesity is defined as the increase in body weight that is 20% greater than an individual’s ideal body weight, which is measured with the BMI (body mass index). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) obesity is considered a global epidemic, as of 2016 1.9 billion adults are overweight and an additional 650 million adults are obese. Root causes of obesity aren’t fully understood, but it is clear people become obese as a result of eating too much and not exercising enough, a lack in calorie burning exercise has led to more obesity. This source is helpful for my research because it gives a definition of what “obesity” really is, as well as giving global numbers of the sheer amount this modern epidemic has spread. It helps convince my audience to care about this issue because of their research into how much obesity has spread around the world and how obesity has truly become a global epidemic.

The obesity rates in America grow as the population gets older, as of 2014 almost 37% of adults are obese or on the threshold of obesity and the numbers have grown since. Younger adults are less prone to obesity with approximately 20-30% being obese (which still isn’t good), adults 40 and above have an obesity rate in the high 30s and low 40s. While the percent of child obesity is much lower it is still growing, as of 2014 around 17% of children were obese. This article is useful for my research on obesity because it gives ballpark numbers on the rates of obesity in different age groups. This information will help convince my audience that obesity is an epidemic by providing real numbers on rates of obesity of people in their age group.

An additional cause of obesity comes in unhealthy advertisements aimed at adolescents. In 2007 about 80 percent of food ads were to the Department of Health and Human Services standards of foods that should only be eaten on “special occasions”, in 2013 despite backlash the percentage of unhealthy advertisements remained the same. Children's eating habits are heavily influenced by what the figures around them eat. These advertisements have improved in the sense of promoting unhealthy eating but have now turned to their very low and laughable standards of what is healthy. This is useful for my research because it talks about one of the causes of obesity and the shaping and modeling unhealthy habits for a younger generation. It helps convince my audience that obesity is spreading to adolescents who are more vulnerable to what they see online, shaping their future habits and health.

If people continue to overlook the causes and effects of obesity this epidemic will continue to spread like wildfire. I can only imagine how bad this issue could get without being seriously addressed. More and more people will die or be left with diseases because of this problem. The rates will continue to skyrocket as our younger generations rates of obesity rise as well as everyone elses. Without serious change obesity will likely be on track to be the worlds leading cause of death in the forseeable future.

A few solutions have presented themselves, although it is impossible to force people to eat healthy and get their exercise it is possible to promote these things. I believe there could be a limit on commericals promoting unhealthy foods and habits especially if they are directed towards adolescents. To go along with cracking down on advertisements and commercials I believe going outside and getting physical exercise should to pushed to the masses. Getting exercise should be considered one of the most important parts of peoples days along with getting the sleep you need. Another possible solution as many people as possible have access to parks and other recreations as a way of getting exercise.
