Το έθιμο του "Μαρτάκου"

Από την 1 η του Μάρτη και για όλο το μήνα τα παιδιά φορούν ένα βραχιολάκι φτιαγμένο με κόκκινη και άσπρη κλωστή στριμμένες μεταξύ τους. Είναι ένα έθιμο που έχει τις ρίζες του πολλά χρόνια πίσω στο παρελθόν. Οι μεγάλοι έλεγαν στα μικρά παιδιά ότι πρέπει να φορούν τον μαρτάκο τους για να μην τους κάψει ο λαμπερός ήλιος του Μάρτη το δέρμα τους.

Οι Απόκριες είναι μια εύθυμη εορτή, την Κυριακή πριν την Καθαρά Δευτέρα. Στην πραγματικότητα, η Κυριακή πριν την Καθαρά Δευτέρα ονομάζεται Κυριακή της Τυρινής, αλλά έχει επικρατήσει ως Απόκριες. Κάψιμο κλαδιών ελιάς μετά το κλάδεμα

Το κλάδεμα της ελιάς είναι μία από τις σημαντικότερες εργασίες στην καλλιέργεια της ελιάς προκειμένου να εξασφαλίσουμε ικανοποιητική παραγωγή κάθε χρόνο. Το κλάδεμα της ελιάς γίνεται κάθε χρόνο, αφού έχει ολοκληρωθεί η συγκομιδή. Κατάλληλη εποχή για να κλαδέψουμε τις ελιές μέσα στο χειμώνα ή στις αρχές της άνοιξης. Προτιμούμε να κλαδεύουμε μετά τον Ιανουάριο, όσο πλησιέστερα προς το Μάρτιο. Βασικός στόχος του κλαδέματος είναι να ισορροπήσουμε τις δύο φυσικές λειτουργίες του δέντρου της ελιάς. On the day of Kathara Deftera (literally translated into Clean Monday), a national holiday that marks the beginning of the 50-day fasting period leading up to Easter, Greek people head to an open space in nature and fly their kite. A sky full of kites is certainly the best beginning for spring!

This tradition is said to symbolize the freeing of the body from sin and as the kite soars, the soul get closer to God.

We made our own kites at school using paper, plastic straws and string and gave them to our younger friends to enjoy kite flying in the school yard.

Nowadays, on March 1, Romanians buy silky red-white threads (șnur) tied into a bow to which a small trinket is attached and offer them to their (female) family members, friends, and colleagues to show friendship, respect, or admiration.

Dragobete is a Romanian holiday that is celebrated on February 24th, each year. In traditional Romanian mythology, Dragobete is a young god, he is a half-human half-angel immortal entity that reminds people to always celebrate love.

This is a Christian Orthodox based celebration, when women bake 40+ small eight-shaped small dough breads. They are dipped in a sauce made out of water, honey, and vanilla scent or rum. After they are dipped they are immersed or sprinkled (as per everyone's taste) into walnut dust. They taste heavenly! Another tradition, for the men, is that one must drink that day 40 glasses of wine. The belief is that the wine will turn into fresh blood and power you up for the next working year. People believe that the wine consumed on this day turns into blood and vigor all the year round. In case someone cannot drink that amount of wine, one should have at least a sip or be spattered with wine.

On the 1sth May, we celebrate the Day of the lily. The lily has many names in Romania but it has one perfume: the shared happiness!
