#1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

Pauline vo

The poem's tone is full of self-esteem and confidence. Not only that but with hope as well. It sounds like he acknowledges what life has in store for him, but he's still living and breathing in the end. He's grateful. Some words that would indicate this are "celebrate" "sing" "belonging" and "I, now 37 years old in perfect health begin, hoping to cease not till death." All of these words show that the author is very hopeful of content with his current self.

#3. What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

--Nathan Kale

Some images that I see in the poem are him talking about the human body, blood, and the earth. He brings up the ideas that we are all connected "every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you" and "My tongue, every atom of my blood, form'd from this soil, this air, Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same,". These two quotes show that he believes that everyone came from the same place from the same atoms and that we are all connected in different ways.

#6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

--Nathan Kale

I think that the central idea is that he is egotistical/full of himself thinking that we are all connected, but that he's better than everyone. He thinks this way because he states "I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard, Nature without check with original energy." and "I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin, Hoping to cease not till death.". Both of these show that he his perfect with the words "perfect health" and "original energy" showing that he doesn't care what others have to say and that he is going to do what he wants to do, that his way of thinking trumps everyone else's way of thinking, that if their not agreeing with him then their wrong.

#7. How important is the role of sound effects, such as rhyme and rhythm? How do they affect tone and meaning?

Pauline vo

Both rhyme and rhythm can change tone drastically. For example, imagine a violet poem rhythmic to the beat of Doctor Sues. That, would admittedly not end up too well. However, they can change the tone by signaling it's incredibly playful or whatnot. In the poem, he states "My tongue, every atom of my blood, formed from this soil, the air,

Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their. . ." We can see that he uses the words soil and their to rythme and convey the message well while still writing it as a poem. This shows Whitman's knowledge on poems and how he still loves the works.
