500 Words.
What can they get from you: ideas, creativity, contacts, mobility

Mental Health Sustainability: You need to help yourself before you help others

500-Word pitch:

You need to help yourself before you help someone else, having stable mental health before making the world a sustainable place. It is a battle between you and your mental health in order to make the world a better place.

With our podcast, we intend on having a simple conversation with our beloved students at UAL, specifically London College of Communication to bring students together and uniting them through the power of speaking, tackling the hard topic on mental health while being a student. We are aware and know that there are people in the medical field who we can approach for help however, it may not always be the most beneficial as mental health is an internal issue, making it difficult for us to talk to individuals who are doing their job. Having that small conversation with someone who can relate from both being the same age and potentially experiencing similar mental health issues can make students feel a lot more comfortable and securely open about their own stories – making them know that they are not alone knowing that there are other perspectives and experiences out there with the same issues they’re facing.

The podcast should be produced as it's something that we hear around the campus daily (not every word per say) but is something intriguing to think and talk about. We can link the idea of seeking guidance, light and advice through the concept of sustainability because we share the hope of helping another mind out.

We believe that the topic of mental health has been highlighted and broken down into something statistical – which is something real and heavy for anybody so young to take upon. It is always warming and useful to hear others go through something similar, hearing what kind of coping mechanisms they use and eventually taking this on as a coping mechanism for our own selves, helping the world go round – making it a better place.

(Written with Asta and Tanvi)

We listen to the energetic and soothing voice of Emma as she uncovers what she may be going through in present time or delivers an episode on advice and hardships. She speaks from experience as a young teen developing fame to how it's going now that she's an adult managing the many ventures she takes on as an influencer.

Emma is real with what she says through the language she uses and how informal the podcast is, which is why I like it so much.

Mental health. Yes, we are jumping into the deep end first – only because you and your mind matter the most!

Hello and welcome to our podcast 'Checking in on YOU’, where we talk about mental health as students and how we can be more sustainable with it all.

We believe that mental health as a topic has gradually been coming out to be something less taboo and more discussed than ever before – especially amongst young people and young adults.

You may question: what does sustainability have to do with mental health talk?

Well, our fellow listeners, sustainability can be broken down into a variety of sub-topics like accessibility, guidance, research, diversity and professionalism, relatability and frequency. All these things can be classified as mental health sustainability or in short: good ways to help reduce an overwhelm in youth mental health.

We hope you can gain something as big or as little to help brighten up your day and to simply talk about the way how you have been feeling lately.

After the winter break, we were tasked to start working on production for our recorded podcast shows.
We did face a few difficulties like long distance - with each of us in the group being based in different countries at the start of the year - and schedule clashes with guests that we intended on having on our show.

However, once we scripted plotted what we wanted as the key elements to our recording, we then worked on adding what other discussions we each planned on including once everyone was back in time for our scheduled recording time.
While Asta was away on her Christmas break back home in Denmark, she worked on writing a little monologue to include as part of the podcast episode. In addition, I decided to add in my personal experience acting as the third person for the episode, due to complications with booking a professional/experienced guest speaker to give advice on mental health for our listeners.

Both elements of the personal monologue and personal account heightened the the structure and content of the episode. Despite the complications that we encountered, we felt that the improvisations and add-ons we made were successful in terms of creating and maintaining a good listening experience/bond with our audience members.

This experience has been a really fun one and I am excited to keep working in the recording studio environment along with voicing out and discussing issues of today's world in a relaxed setting.
