The book begins with Jack's fifth birthday. We are introduced to the world as he knows it, from his perspective. We go through his daily routine in "room", we hear about all the different furniture that is inside of room and we learn about someone who isn't inside of room, "Old Nick". We also learn that to Jack, everything outside the room is in outer space. Throughout the first part of the book we become familiar with the way that Jack speaks and thinks, and we also know that there isn't something right with the situation they are in.

During part two Jack's mother tells him the truth about where they are and what happened to them. She tells him about how when she was 19 she got tricked and kidnaped by Old Nick. She told him about how she tried to escape by throwing things at the skylight, screaming, and she even tried to dig out from under the bed. Then in part three they come up with a plan. Jack and his mother pretend that he got really sick and died. Then Old Nick would have to take him out of the room and Jack could run and find someone to help.

I was very impressed with this book. It was amazing to see the way that Donoghue was able to show this terrible event from the eyes of such a young boy. It was also interesting to see his vocabulary and ability to form coherent sentences develop over the course of the book.
