Introduction

It was like every other morning. I woke up, got dressed and walked to the kitchen where my breakfast was always waiting for me. It was cereal as usual. Soon, it was time for school. Mom called, "Sunny! The bus is here!" I slurped the last of the milk and ran for my backpack. "Bye mom! Love you!" I said as I ran towards the corner of our street. Up the stairs I climbed and walked to my usual front row seat. It wasn't until I got to school in the city over that I realized it would be a weird day.

As we got closer to my school, I noticed that there was only light in half of the school building. One half looked normal and the other half was pitch black. It looked as dark as night. I was so confused. Everyone was. Even the bus driver. The look on her face said it all. Marty and I walked down the bus steps to Mrs.Riley with her hands on her head. She was pacing back and fourth and looked very stressed. We had no idea what was going on. Marty and I knew we had to find the others. "Let's go! Hurry!" yelled Marty as he raced to our classroom door.

When Marty and I got to our classroom, there was only one small lamp on in the back of the room. The others were not on. The whiteboard at the front of the class had a message written on it that read "We are experiencing a quick blackout. Power should be on soon." We sighed with relief as we realized it would be over soon and that we can carry on with our normal school day routine soon. Mrs. Powel, our fourth grade teacher reassured us that everything would be okay soon. "Please have a seat boys. We are just waiting for the electricity company to come over and get things running again."

By the time we knew it, an entire year had gone by. As you may have guessed, our electricity was never restored. We had learned to live without it and make do with what we had available to us. Supermarket shelves had eventually become almost empty, many clothing stores had shut down, and school days were never the same. After about 3 months of the blackout, Marty, the boys and I knew we had to do something about it. We decided to put what we learned in fourth grade to good use. We had decided that we would have to take matters into our own hands.

Conclusion

That summer, we tried many things. We had access to a junk yard where there were many unused items and electrical parts. We decided that we would use them to come up with a way to create our own wind turbine and solar panel roofs. In our fourth grade class we had learned how wind could help spin the shafts on a turbine to generate power. We had also learned how with the help of the sun, solar cells in solar panels can help create energy to power homes. After lots of trial and error, Marty and I had eventually figured out how to use this energy to power essential things in our homes and eventually those of our city. These are things like our refrigerators, stoves, and supermarkets. We are so glad that we could save our city and help our community in times of need.
