While each book centers around a new story line, each new book in the series includes the previous set of characters.

For instance "Cinder" follows Cinder and Kai. "Scarlet" follows Scarlet and Wolf. "Cress" follows Cress and Thorne. And so on. But once a character is followed they are apart of every story from then on. The world has fought 2 more World Wars, and the Moon now has a thriving colony. There is peace on Earth and the Moon is an independent nation....for now.

A plague has broken out on Earth but not on Luna. Earth needs Luna to create a vaccine. Queen Levanna of Luna is willing to make treaty with Earth, as the Moon's economy and resources are running out. But she doesn't want just any treaty, she wants a marriage alliance that will ensure her rule over Earth. 

After the 4th World War, the remaining leaders form a World Council to keep all nations and countries in check. Most are republics with elected leadership, but a few still retain monarchies. For Levana's plan to succeed she can just marry some one who can be voted out of office, she must have a royal title to main her rule.

The word lunatic derives from the word lunar, which of course is another word for Moon.

In this series the colonists that live on the Moon have evolved as a side effect of the Moon's power. The have the ability to control minds! Not really, but very close. The scientific term is Bioelectrical Manipulation. Every brain works off electrical synapses firing. The Lunars are able to control this electrical field and change it to suit their needs. Making people do things at their will, changing the way something looks, even changing their own appearance. Everyone on Luna is born with the ability to control bioelectric impulses. Which is why the Earthens fear the Lunars. If anyone on the Moon can control anyone on Earth, then why would they let them come.

But Luna is running out of time. The Lunars need to come to Earth. And that is underlying conflict of the whole series. No one is on a pedistool, no one has all the right answers. Mistakes are made, characters are selfish and selfiess. They're well rounded and genuine. That's why this story, (a story with cyborgs, mind control, space travel, and set hundreds of years in the future) is still relatable to millions of people.
