I believe that it is that pillar because if there are two roads, you are going to have to make a choice as to which one you're hoping is the right one. With The Alchemist, Santiago has to decide his path with his own hero's journey. As he turns one corner, he has to figure out what adventure or what choice comes next. One's heart is the deciding factor of which that truly is what they believe in.
