Theme: Be kind to one another

The story begins during a cold winter day, when a new student name Maya is introduced. Maybe because she is new, is a little different from the rest of her classmates, or maybe for some secret, never-revealed reason, Chloe and her friends ignore the new girl's offerings of friendship. They refuse to play with her or even smile at her and call her names because she always comes in hand-me-down clothes. One day, Maya is absent from school, the same at the teacher gives a lesson on the ripple effects of our actions, to which Chloe realizes too late that she has missed the chance to extend the kindness to Maya, due to Maya moving away. Towards the end, Chloe regrets being mean to Maya and realizes that even the smallest actions can have a great impact on someone's life. She realizes that she cannot make up for being mean to Maya, and finally understands the importance of being kind and that don't always get a second chance to fix your mistakes.

Literary Element: Symbolism

During the same day that Maya is absent for school, the teacher has the students throw a pebble in a puddle of water and has them observed the ripple of the water. She does this activity to demonstrate how every little thing that we do goes out, like a ripple, into the world and has an effect on others.
In addition, symbolism is shown through the weather because it starts off with snowy weather, to which can connect to Chloe being so mean to Maya because she sees Maya wearing worn out clothes and spring sneakers. However, the last two pages are filled with shimmering greens and a sense of loss for a missed opportunity to brighten someone else's day with the simplest act.

Literary Element: Character Development

In Each Kindness, it shows us the development of the character Chloe. The story is done in the perspective of Chloe and at first she talks about how doesn't want to be friends with the new girl Maya, but she doesn't know why. In the beginning, Chloe along with her other classmates bullied Maya by talking, laughing, and calling her names behind her back, along with excluding her from activities. However, towards the end Chloe realizes the power of her excluding behavior due to her teacher teaching them the effects of their actions, but it is too late to fix her mistakes because Maya had already left the community. Even though she doesn't say exactly why she turned away from Maya, we can see that Chloe had judged Maya by the way she looked and not who she was - a lonely little girl who only wanted to be friends.

At the end of this book I will like the students to do a mini project. They will have to write a journal entry where they are to describe an act of kindness that they can pay forward and make the world a little better. Then the students will participate in an activity called "Ripples of Kindness" where they first get to observe the activity of throwing a stone in a puddle of water and then one a sheet of paper, each student will start by extending

kindness to someone. That student then pays-it-forward to someone else. How big can your

ripple of kindness get?
