  • Joining RSOs: UIUC has over 1,000 registered student organizations, covering a diverse range of interests, from sports to cultural organizations, political groups, and more. 
  • Peer mentors and Upperclassmen: Learning from students who had already navigated the university's resources and could provide me with valuable insight into the different academic and extracurricular opportunities available on campus.

  • Sports:  Ultimate Frisbee, which was a sport that I had never played before. It challenged me physically and mentally while also allowing me to make new friends and connections on campus.
  • Academic Goals: Vis-a-Vis Tutoring, which provided me with the opportunity to teach improving my own understanding of the material in the process. As well as the Holocaust Education Center, to expand my knowledge of history and engage with important topics related to my major and minor.
  • Nationwide Organizations: Habitat for Humanity, which allowed me to participate in meaningful community service projects while also connecting with individuals and organizations beyond the university campus.

  • UIUC offers a variety of workshops, seminars, and training sessions that have helped me, as well as other students develop various important skills. These resources are available through all departments.
  • The Career Center also offers a range of resources and services that I have used to explore career paths and develop professional skills, such as resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and networking events.
  • Lastly through academic departments, and RSOs, I have furthered my academic goals by becoming a member of Vis-a-Vis tutoring which has allowed me to further my time and experience in the classroom. As well as, the Holocaust Education Center which has provided me with experience teaching historical education and writing lesson plans.

  • By exploring new opportunities at the UIUC  I greatly challenged myself and stepped outside of my comfort zone. 
  • Ultimate Frisbee: I was required to learn a new sport, something that pushed me physically and mentally out of my comfort zone. As well as interact with a new group of people, a team. 
  • Similarly, becoming a classroom aide with Vis-a-Vis Tutoring and working with the Holocaust Education Center had me taking on leadership roles in the classroom and engaging with complex and sensitive material, which was something that I had never done, which I also find to be challenging.
  • I believe by pushing myself to explore new opportunities and taking on new challenges, in various circumstances, I continue to grow and develop as an individual, both individually and professionally.

These events were offered by different departments and organizations within the university and were designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel academically and professionally. I made it a point to attend as many of these events as possible because I knew they would be valuable in helping me achieve my academic and career goals.

    One event that I attended regarded financial planning for college students. This event was especially helpful for me as I was concerned about managing my finances while in college. The session covered topics such as creating a budget, managing student loans, and building credit.     One of the workshops that I attended was a Career Fair Workshop, which helped me prepare for upcoming career fair. The workshop was a collection of smaller workshops that covered everything from creating an effective resume to developing an elevator pitch and dressing appropriately. This workshop was particularly helpful because it provided me with the necessary skills and confidence to make the most of the career fair.

    As a student who had studied abroad in Granada, Spain, I can attest to the immense value of attending study abroad seminars and events at the University of Illinois. These opportunities provided me with a wealth of information on how to make the most of my study abroad experience and how to prepare effectively for my time overseas.

    The Study Abroad Fair was particularly helpful in providing me with an overview of the different programs available to students at the university. Representatives from various study abroad programs were present, and I was able to gather information on the locations, courses, and living arrangements available for each program. I was also able to speak with students who had previously studied abroad and learn about their experiences.

    Overall, attending these study abroad seminars and events played a critical role in my successful study abroad experience. The knowledge I gained through these events helped me to choose the right program, prepare effectively for my time overseas, and make the most of my study abroad experience. I highly recommend that incoming freshman attend these events to gain valuable insights into the study abroad experience and make the most of their time at the University of Illinois.
