Job Description

An airline pilot's job description is to safely fly an airliner, but a pilot does much more than just fly. A typical day may start with the pilot using computer skills to check weather and flight plans. The plane must be pre-flighted and all aircraft logs reviewed. When ready, the pilot will oversee the push-back and then taxi to the runaway. While flying, in addition to monitoring aircraft systems, the pilot must communicate with the FAA and the company. Pilots may work long hours and strange shifts, often being away from home for several days.

http://www.hcareers.com/us/resourcecenter/tabid/306/articleid/617/default.aspx

My Work Experience

1. Cathay Pacific Airways - I undertook a week of work experience at Cathay in March 2015. This involved me performing the basic duties of a cadet pilot. Therefore I did computer based training about the Boeing 777-300 and also attended few lectures. I also observed how the simulator training, flight attendant training and simulator engineering is carried out. On the final day I also got to test fly the simulators to get a feel for what I will be doing in the future if all goes to plan.

2. JetOne Motion - I have a part time job at a motion simulator company in Central Hong Kong. I am a flight simulator instructor so I teach clients the basics of flying on a simulator. This normally means I run them through the controls of the Cessna 172 or the Airbus A320 and then let them do a few circuit flights and if I feel they are ready I will give them a flight from A to B.

3. Haeco - I spent two days at Haeco. This company is an engineering company that repairs planes at Hong Kong Airport. From the interiors, to the wing to the engine they can fix it. Whilst there I was able to spectate how the engine is removed from an aircraft, how flaps of a plan are repaired, got involved with an engine repair and more. I also learnt about the different engine manufactures and had a quick introduction to the parts of an enginge and its function.

Introduction To The Cathay Cadet Program

The Cathay Cadet Program is an all expenses paid course that

provides students to be commercial pilots. After a 3 stage selection

including an interview, a physical test and more successful applicants

are sent to Adelaide Sydney. They will then spend an year training

and when finished they will have all required liscenses to fly commericial

aircrafts. However after they return to Hong Kong they have another 8

weeks of training in the simulators and doing intense theory to understand

the aircraft they have been assigned in detail.

There is a twist to this though. Everything for free for nothing in return

would be way to good. Cadets have to in return work 7 years for the company

and most of that time you will be spending being a second officer, unless

you prefrom very well and get promoted. A second officer mainly supervises

the flight deck and makes sure the First Officer and

the captain don't let anything slip by.

Cathay tend to look for young adults between 18-25 generally for the cadet program mainly because they will be able to have a long career in the company therefore working more years for them. They will interview you, put you in group based activities and more. If they are happy with how you perform they will then send you for the final stage in Adelaide to assess your basic flying skills. The other more specific requirements are as follows:

Be physically fit and qualify for a Class 1 Medical

Meet our flight deck reach requirements

Have the right of abode in Hong Kong

Have a secondary school education with good passes in mathematics and science, or a degree or diploma, or passes in all ATPL subjects

Be 18 years of age or more.

                                          http://jobsatcathaypacific.com/cadetpilots/requirements.php
