This semi-autobiographical graphic novel is a wonderful book addressing deafness. The author creates herself as the main character, CeCe, a deaf-bunny who is very self conscious about her disability and desparately trying to find ways to fit in with other kids. CeCe combines humor and real emotions from true life experiences that provide more context about being deaf. By presenting that context through humorous and realistic situations, Bell helps the hearing get a better perspective of life as a deaf person.

This book clearly defines and describes racism. It describes how racism makes people feel when they experience it and points out ways of spotting it. It is a great read aloud for introducing kids to the topic of racism.

This nonfiction chapter book teaches kids about the history and origins of racism and shines a light on anitracism. The reader travels from the present to the past and back to the present with the mission and ability to "stamp" out racist thoughts in their own lives. Along the journey through time kids discover where racist ideas came from and identify how they shape America today. It also features people who fought racism with anti-racism helping to improve inequalities and discrimination.

This picture book tells a powerful story with its words and illustrations. The story shares two sisters' experiences on the first day of school and how they learn from it. The sisters are black Muslims who are excited to wear the hijab, however, the reactions from other students are unkind. The story is told through each girl's point of view allowing the reader a peek at how they use pride, faith, and family to handle hurtful bullying. It's an amazing story of combating bigotry with grace.

This is a free verse poem written into a picture book by the renown poet, Joy Harjo, who is Native American. Drawing from her tribe's traditional beliefs and heritage, she creatively tells why people need to remember where they came from and how all things on Earth are intertwined and connected. The illustrations add more depth, richness and beauty to the story/poem.

2. Using the Name Infographic, students will pair up to do a compare and contrast of their names. Then they will write a short essay expressing an opinion about why names are important and should be respected.

3. Using the book : The Boy at the Back of the Class, students will write from the point of view of Ahmet or Alexa to describe how it feels to be an immigrant alone in a new country without family or friends.

This video is an interview with Josh and his mom. Josh has autism and was nonverbal as a toddler until he heard music. The first time he heard music he verbally expressed himself through song and revealed an amazing natural talent for singing. Singing and music helped him become more verbal and was used to improve his communication skills.

This video provides a site with multiple videos of various read alouds, songs, and messages about what racism, anti-racism, and how it feels to belong and not belong. It is great for having discussions, giving examples and showing ways to recognize and avoid it.

This article tells about a student with special needs from the teacher's perspective. It shares how Connor is both alike and different from other students in a classroom setting and describes his behaviors during specific activities. This would be a good article to read in literature circles and use for discussions.

This article offers reasons and evidence for having inclusive classrooms. It shares information and research supporting the classroom cohorts of students with and without disabilities. It shares another perspective of inclusion having a positive impact on student success both in and beyond the classroom.

2. Pulling ideas from the previous small groups activity, children will create a powerpoint presentation describing ways to create an inclusive classroom and reasons that support using them in schools.

3. Students will collaborate to develop and create a class book that teaches about inclusive classrooms. The book will include student information and research,  illustrations, and any other media or mediums students choose. The book may be done digitally or made on paper, it will be a student choice.

2. Have a class debate about past and present civil rights, equities, and laws.

3. Choose one problem, inequity, issue, act or law that you feel is unfair. Think of a way to correct the problem or ways to address improving it. Once you have your problem and a way of correcting it, write a letter about it to a local government official.

4. If Martin Luther King, Jr was alive today, what would he write in his personal journal about the world today? Taking his point of view, write a personal journal entry from his perspective. How would he feel about equity today? Where would he see success? Where would he find failure? What are some areas he would like to improve in? Write in the first person and be detailed and expressive, try speaking (writing) using his voice.

2. Create a T-Chart listing Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism on one side. On the other side write what you know, think, and wonder about each religion.

3. Choose one religion to research and create a google slide for presenting information about it. Include pictures and videos to support your facts. Be creative and have fun!

4. After viewing the video about Henry, the Holocaust Survivor, write a letter to him telling him what you learned from him. In your letter include the following questions and ideas, but feel free to add others, too. Describe something he shared  that surprised you and explain why it did. Henry said he believes there is still hate in America, do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?

5. Think about your view of teaching different religions in public schools. Then write a persuasive essay expressing your opinion about the topic. Provide reasons and evidence to support your opinion.
