At this mosque there is the IF Youth Program that provides Islamic teachings, engaging activities, and guided discussion. Kids from ages 8-14 come and are split into two groups, “IGNITE” and “SPARK”. The ignite group is from kids 6th-8th grade and the spark group is kids from 3rd-5th. The program is every Wednesday from 6-8 PM. I am an IF Youth Leader for Ignite. I help come up with fun activities and lead discussion along with the other volunteers in my group. As well, I help set up everything in the mosque depending on what we will be doing that Wednesday, hand out food, and clean everything up in the end.

One of the goals being Good Health and Well-Being. The kids are coming very excited for the program plans ahead. We keep them busy and active with engaging activities. Wether it’s running, painting, playing board games, or more they are always up and moving. As well, we have a guided prayer they can follow which can act as a breather to calm themselves down after a busy day. Depending on the programs plan, we always provide yummy food that they love to eat which follows the Zero Hunger goal. They all enjoy not only the activities but each other, having fun with their friends- even volunteers! The goal of this program at heart is to allow young Muslim kids to have someone they feel comfortable with. Volunteers are encouraged to become friends with the kids, eating, and playing fun games with them. This program starts in August and ends during May. The volunteers here are making bonds with the kids coming in from the very beginning. We see the same faces walking in and just like the kids we also get excited to see them. Adding on, this program aligns with the UN’s goal of Quality Education due to the structure of this program. Although we have fun activities that aren’t lesson based, most of the activities done give the kids a chance to learn about religion and culture. One day we spent the evening learning about world events happening in Palestine. We then got eat a cultural dish, Biryani. It was a lot of introductions and icebreakers between the kids and volunteers. We did our usual guided prayer afterwards and finished it off with eating pizza. 

9/20: Came in at 5:45 to help set up for the day. Did some more icebreakers to get the kids to feel more comfortable. After, we had a Sheikh come in and give a story time when the kids finished praying. Finished off the day eating pizza. 

9/27: This day we started off eating pizza and then went to go do a guided prayer. After, Sheikh Noman came and did a story time for the kids. We then got into our activity which was playing outside basketball or soccer for Ignite group. 

10/4: Same as usual, activities for ignite remained outside before it the weather would get colder. 

10/11: I came in around 5:45 to help set up tables and chairs. We moved activities outside to inside due to weather. Girls in ignite group played board games such as mafia. Ended off the night with traditional Palestinian dish called Maklouba. 

10/18: We did the usual guided prayer and story time, but then played a fun game of kahoot with Islamic questions. Ended off the night by eating Pita Pita. 

10/25: We had a story time about Halloween as it was approaching and had a candy station set up after eating food. Kids got to put toppings on their ice cream and enjoy with their friends.

I continued volunteering there for my NHS hours and was able to create an ever bigger bond with the kids I see. I also am still volunteering to this day. I am not sure if ll go back to volunteer next year, I’ll have to see my college schedule, but I might be leading the program with my aunt! With this program I was able to learn patience and developed a more creative side to my self. The activities we did with the kids was very fun.
