I think the groups attitude changed towards Salva because they thought he was too young to handle himself and thought that now that there was no one who cared for him they could just let him be and i think they thought that Salva would eventually just be left behind or something ate him or something happened to him, an accident or something. And everyone would eventually forget about him. Also I think that the group thought that Salva was to much work for the group and he would just be another complaining kid. But he wasn’t. And as they ignored and cared less about him his determination to not give up, keep up to the group and just not getting behind of the group grew.

The event that made Salva realize his family is gone was that his uncle said that the village of Loun Arik was burned and bombed and that his family was killed. 
The memory that helped Salva keep going was, his uncle said “Do you see were the bushes are, all you need to do is walk to the bushes”. 
Salva didn't give up because he had to honour his family by staying alive.

I think that the group's attitude towards Salva changed because the group knew that the reason they cared for Salva was because of his Uncle having a gun. Salva's Uncle died so the group didn't care anymore because his Uncle wasn't alive to force them to feed him or feed Salva himself. Salva might try to not wine when he gets leftovers for food, he could grow stronger and become the leader as he did.
