"an especially loud complaint from the english teacher"

a superior may report someone to a higher up for performing sub-par, whether work or school. After Mr. Simpson allowed Big Mike to enter briarcrest, Mrs Graves began receiving complaints, including “an especially loud complaint from the english teacher”(pg. 9). In this quote it’s mentioned that some of the teachers have issues with Big Mike going to briarcrest. This can be inferred to have some issue with Big Mike’s academic performance due to the previous information we’ve been given about his performance in public school. This quote also tells us that Big Mike struggles more with english than some of the other classes. Since this causes a negative reaction from most teachers this tells the reader that he is performing very poorly. All of these things are shown to be out of Mike’s control, as the reader can infer that he was never properly taken care of. Despite this, since he is achieving less than the grade desired by his teachers, they report and complain to the special needs teacher, instead of finding some way to help the poor boy.

"the girls glared at me as we left the stage--i had ruined the performance"

people don't like it when you mess up their performance. The girls all head up on to stage and begin performing, except for Tara, who just does some of the motions, and afterwards, she sees that “the girls glared at me as we left the stage--I had ruined the performance”(pg. 6). In this quote it’s brought up that Tara alone ruined the performance by not fully performing the moves. This is also shown to make the other girls angry, even though they were not the ones who messed up, implying that Tara’s actions could’ve damaged their image. This could’ve impacted Tara, even if she didn’t see it, as later on she's shown feeling as if shes unworthy to be at the school she is. The reader can guess that this is partly caused by the other girls. It is also shown that this is solely caused by Tara not acting how the other girls expected her to, and so they sent glares her way as signals of anger and disappointment.

"my folks said your daddy was a disgrace"

sometimes a person has to defend someone, even if others hate them for it. One day when scout is at school she gets into a fight with Cecil about Atticus defending Tom, and Cecil says “My folks said your daddy is a disgrace”(Tkam chapter 9). In this quote it is stated that Cecil’s family is angry with Atticus’s actions. The reader can infer that the reason that the family is angry is due to the fact that Atticus is defending a black man, something the town is very against, and as such, they verbally insult him and call him things such as disgrace. This is shown multiple times throughout the book, even being insulted by his own family. This is all revealed to be caused by Atticus accepting to defend a black person, something the town does not agree with, and so, since Atticus didn’t act in the town’s preferred way, they begin verbally attacking him.
