The role of women in society had always been inferior to men. In cultures around the world, the role of a woman was to stay home and watch over the house and children. They had no rights to their own lives, and could not own property or take part in society. Then the World Wars came, and the men who would usually be a part of the workforce were needed for fighting. Suddenly there were not enough men left to run the industry needed for a war effort. All healthy young men were sent off to war, leaving only the elderly men and all the women behind. Women were suddenly in every part of industry, able to shape society directly, and becoming the main breadwinners of their family. For the first time, women were out of the house and in the workforce en masse. Then the war ended, and all the men came home. They expected to just pick up where they had left off, coming back to their jobs, and more importantly, wives, having been exactly as they left them before. This was not the case. Women had grown used to being a part of society, and for the first time were willing and able to prove that they were a valuable part of society. [Although women had previously taken on an almost subservient role in society, becoming involved in the workforce during World War 2 opened the eyes of many to the unequal treatment they were being given. Women recognized that they were a valuable part of society, and the once docile housewives of America began to protest their unfair wages, lack of equal rights and privileges, and subjugation by a male-dominated society.]

T- Despite woman being expected to help in the war effort while being oppressed in a many of ways, the idea of women being lesser than men was so ingrained in society in the time span of 1940-1975, and previously, that the movement of women fighting for their rights rose. Just some examples of unfair treatment that led to this was unequal pay for the same job and skill level a man had, the expectation of women to stay at home and cook and clean, and ideal beauty standards women were supposed to meet.

(Despite women playing a crucial role in America during World War II and making great strides towards equal rights, they were not initially granted fully equal rights after the war.) During the second world war, women worked jobs that were previously only for men. Women were serving their country, hoping to obtain equal rights as men when the war came to an end. However, this was not the case. The war gave women the opportunity to work jobs that were not previously available and this is what fueled the women's rights movement. Once men started to resume their traditional jobs, women were either out of work or paid low wages. Women now knew what was unavailable to them and were going to fight vigorously for it.

Despite the years women spent in the workforce during World War 2, they were still being treated unequal and being overworked and underpaid. In order for them to pursue a higher role and equality, women lead political and social reforms, known as the women's rights movement which sought after peace and civil rights. Women faced the challenges of being underpaid for doing the same job as a man, being expected to stick to the roles of a housewife, and feeling the oppression of being less than males in society.

While the modern feminist movement is continually working towards equal pay and the right to choose whether or not to keep an unborn fetus, the roots of these issues stem as far back as 1940, when women were only just entering the workplace due to the lack of male laborers because of World War II. After World War II, men who were serving during the war came back to the United States expecting to return to their jobs, and many of them did, but this resulted in many of the women who had taken over their responsibilities to give up their new found jobs and return to being housewives, but this did not sit well with many women, and those women who did stay in the workplace were paid drastically less than their male coworkers. Throughout thew rest of the 20th century, women continued to push back into the workplace, but their wages were not able to compete with a man doing the same jobs, and as a result, many women fought for equal pay and are still fighting to close the pay gap.

Throughout the 1900s, there were social changes happening. It started mainly when the U.S. entered WWII after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Women took over the workforce for the men going off to fight in the war. When the war was over, there was an increase of women joining the workforce Unfortunately, there were factors limiting women to do so. For instance, they are getting paid less. Also, to men, women were looked as less powerful and seemed unfit to do the same jobs that a man does. This led to women wanting change, so they could have the same opportunities as a man.

During world war 2, women started to integrate into the workplace. As they worked they began to like their jobs and felt that they had gained some of their rights they so greatly desired. However after the war was over they were expected to return home returning the breadwinner position back over to the men. This had a dramatic affect on women and they began to rise up and began the women civil rights movement of the 1940's in which they claimed they were equal to the men. They wanted equal rights to the men, to be able to work with them and to hold job positions that were so called "Only suitable for men". This lead to women pursuing higher and higher roles in this society of reconstruction and advancement.

Throughout all of history women have always played an important role in running the home life and tending to the children but were never allowed to do much more. Although women began to get more rights during the era of the women's rights movement, they were still subject to gender discrimination in ways such as being under payed for doing the same job, receiving inferior business positions because of their sex as well as being held to the irrational expectations created through pageants such as the Miss America Pageant.

Though women worked during world war 2, when the men returned they wanted their jobs back and kicked the women out of the workforce when they returned home. However I feel that women are just as equal as men and some are even stronger and can bare more labor than some men. If women could handle the struggle of the workforce while the men were gone at work then they can still handle it when they come back and should be given equal rights as men.

While men were off fighting World War 2, women got to experience a working life as they filled in for the men in the meantime. The fight for equal rights between the sexes is known as feminism which continued to grow through protests and petitions during this time period. When the men returned from war, they expected their jobs back and instead returned to empowered women making moves to be treated equally
