For me, the most meaningful aspect after reviewing competency standard 1.2 was to provide trauma-informed care to patients from different cultural backgrounds, particularly those with refugee-like experiences, such as traumatic events (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). I have improved my knowledge on the importance and application of trauma-informed care during assessments, treatment and the ongoing care of patients (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). Having analysed this standard, I now understand the importance of modifying care to accommodate the needs of patients with refugee experiences, to support a positive view of healthcare and healthcare providers such as nurses (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). This skill of taking a trauma-informed approach to care is essential to me in the workplace as it allows me to create a safe, respectful space for those with a refugee background, as well as avoiding and supporting potential triggers (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). Previously, I did not consider that healthcare could trigger distressing thoughts or events for certain individuals. This might be due to the fact my experiences of healthcare have always been positive, and I had a lack of understanding of refugee experiences with healthcare (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019).

References:

Migrant and refugee women's health partnership.
TRADITIONAL FOLK MEDICINE

Folk medicine is a traditional practice within Ukraine and has been passed through generations. Folk medicine became prominent during the 19th and 20th centuries. Parts of Ukraine that were isolated lacked modern healthcare, which allowed the tradition to continue(Iryna Ihnatenko, 2021).

This traditional way of healing involves treatment using materials like plants, animals and minerals. Ukrainian folk practices commonly involved many objects within nature, like birch and oak trees. Birch trees are used to treat a cough; the sap in the tree, combined with parts of the leaves, mixed with water or vodka, helps soothe a cough (Iryna Ihnatenko, 2021).

Some diseases were thought to be sent from a supernatural means; these diseases needed special treatment from people called healers who used rituals and spells to be rid of the disease. Ukrainian folk medicine is heavily based on spiritual health, with religion playing a role in treatment. Healers would use religious symbols to remove disease (Iryna Ihnatenko, 2021).

References:

Iryna Ihnatenko. (2021, December 10). Folk medicine.
