This shows how King Alcinous is god-fearing and wary of the gods interference with mortal life. He is aware of their power, and the fact that he says "playing" and "trick" shows how he regards it a game. Analysis: This shows that Arete is a typical contemporary wife; she has command of the slaves and maids in the household, and oversees what goes on. It also shows that she has good xenia, as she prepares the finest bed for Odysseus with purple rugs which would have been incredibly expensive at the time.

Analysis: Alcinous is portrayed as a kind and generous host who is eager to help Odysseus return home. He also shows good xenia, as he has no idea who Odysseus is, yet he still provides a ship and crew for him to reach his home.
