I disagree with this quote. I could be wrong but I suspect that this person is referring to all of the destruction and despair in the world as a reason to not look for hope outside of one's self. However, he seems to be disregarding all of the creation and joy that is there right along with it. It's the good that happens because of the bad that gives us hope. When we watch a movie and the character is the underdog but wins or when we hear a real person'ss story of their pain and suffering but now they are stronger, that's where we find hope. It lives everywhere outside of us. And even though hope exists because of the bad outside of us, it becomes much bigger and stronger inside of us because of that very fact.

I agree with this quote because I think it really captures how hope has always been involved in the lives of humans, since way way wayyyyy back in the beginning. Just imagine that life thousands of years ago. And imagine the hope that had to continuously be there for the individual person who was just trying to survive the day. It had to take hope to inspire them to create new ways to get food or a new way to create shelter--and then the hope it took to eventually create societies that worked together (unfortunately sometimes by hurting and killing other societies in the process) and then to get to what we have now, which is filled with so much convenience and safety (for most, but not all) in the world. All of that took hope. Things that didn't exist before came into existence because of hope. Everything that we have now and everything we wish to change for the better together as humans is because of hope.

It isn't always easy to be optimistic but trying to see the good in situations (holding on to that HOPE) can have a profound impact on your outlook on everything. Sometimes you have to 'fake it until you make it' and a positive attitude/outlook can give you that momentum in life you need to hold on to hope.

O poor, unthinking human heart! Error will not go away, logic and reason are slow to penetrate. We cling with both arms to false hope, refusing to believe in the weightiest proofs against it, embracing it with all our strength. In the end it escapes, ripping our veins and draining our heart's blood; until, regaining consciousness, we rush to fall into snares of delusion all over again. - Rabindranath Tagore

I agree with this quote. It reminds of

Friedrich Nietzsche's perspective that he(her) who has a why can bear almost any how. Viktor Frankl also discusses this idea in his book, Man's Search for Meaning. Essentially, if we can find meaning from the struggles of the moment and recognize that the future expects something from us, we can overcome.
