Performing arts can be used as a media to inform people about the negative social impacts of social practices. Through this form of media, a message can be brought out to educate people about the negative social practices like smoking or violence and how we can deal with them.
Performing arts can bring about dramatic social change through the power of storytelling. When arts thrive, freedom of expression thrives, art directly empower the most vulnerable members in society. In an Oscar-winning documentary, Saving Face, it drew worldwide attention and encouraged the local Punjabi government to do more to support victims of female victims of acid attacks. Their cases are now fast-tracked through special anti-terrorism courts. Before it took perpetrators to justice now it take months.

Singapore’s situation is arguably more precarious because it is a city-state, and hence has no natural hinterland to which people can choose to move.

While Singapore’s remarkable performance in this Index must surely be cheered, its high rank is a poignant reminder that “Singapore the global city” may be increasingly different from “Singapore of the heartlands”. For the city’s long-term stability—which depends on the happiness and well-being of all citizens—there is a need to ensure that Singapore develops not as these two separate socio-economic narratives, but as one, where every Singaporean can tap into and be part of the competitive, global city.

Women in Singapore experience greater gender equality as compared to their counterparts from other nation. This Is because, Singapore ensures that all children are able to get access to education regardless of their gender through government enforced laws such as the Compulsory Education Act. However, in other countries, a stigma that boys are superior to girls hinders girls from receiving quality education. Take for instance how in most parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, 21% of children do not go to school, and 23% of girls are deprived of schooling as compared to 19% of boys. Thus, as more Singaporean girls can study in school unlike in other nations, it is evident that they experience less gender inequality.
