We are a free service that supports parents/carers of children aged 8-17. We hope to support your family to build resilience whilst learning new skills and strategies on your parenting journey. We also aim to enhance children's health, wellbeing and development.

As a parent/carer of a child who is 8-17 you have access to this service if you live in Caerphilly. We have a range of support programmes which you can engage in on a one to one or group basis which are delivered face to face or online.

We are funded by Welsh Government, Families First, Caerphilly County Borough Council.

1. Refer yourself to us

Anyone can refer to our service if they live in Caerphilly County Borough Council and they are a parent/carer of a child aged 8-17.

In order to refer yourself you must contact Caerphilly County Borough Council – Information Advice and Assistance (IAA) on 0808 100 1727

2. When we receive your referral

Kanchana will send you a text message to acknowledge that we have received your referral.

We aim to make contact with you from the details provided in the referral form within 14 days

If we do not have a mobile number for you, we will write to you and ask you to contact us.

3. Your initial call will be with me...

If you have provided details about your current situation in the referral form, I will read this before I make contact with you to ensure I have understood your circumstances.

What will we talk about during the initial call?
* We will ask you if you were aware of the referral to us.
* We will discuss the information in your referral form to ensure that this is accurate and up to date.
* We will remind you that we are a voluntary service and it is your choice if you want to engage with us.
* We will invite you to share your situation and discuss the support we can offer you and your family.
* We will provide you with a range of information regarding the support we can offer and the timescales in which it can be accessed.
* We will let you know about other services across Caerphilly that may be able to provide you with relevant support depending on your situation.

After this initial phone call with you, we will aim to be in touch with you within 4 weeks.

At this point, you will be introduced to your very own Family Support Worker.

The Family Support Worker will be your single point of contact during your time with us. They are there to understand your current circumstance, to provide a listening ear and advocate for you and your family.

Depending on the type of support you discussed during your initial call with Fiona, we will undertake either 1 or 2 or both of the below which aims to get to know your further (we will do this in the beginning and at the end of our support with you):

1) Family Star action plan

We will guide a discussion to complete a Family Star Form and explore the following topics:
- Physical health
- Emotional wellbeing
- Keeping children safe
- Social networks
- Boundaries & behaviour
- Family routine
- Home and money

This will help us to understand your family better and think about how we can best support you all. We will invite you to lead the action plan and we will always have ideas of actions if you are unsure.

2) Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS)

This is a scaling questionnaire which gives us an understanding of your current wellbeing. It indicates how you are feeling at this present time of your journey.

Family Links Nurture Programme

This programme is interactive and fun! Its aim is to develop your emotional and mental wellbeing which is crucial in family life. It can be difficult to understand and manage difficult feelings and challenging behaviour that your young person displays. We have you covered, join us on this programme!

Family Links Nurture Programme (Additional Needs)

This programme is for families with a child/young person who is going through the diagnosis process for a disability.

This programme is interactive and fun! Its aim is to develop your emotional and mental wellbeing which is crucial in family life. It can be difficult to understand and manage difficult feelings and challenging behaviour particularly with a child who is going through the diagnosis process. Join us on this programme and meet others in the same situation as you!

Understanding your child (Solihull Approach)

The programme aims to focus on the parent-child relationships by promoting a reflective style for life long learning. Whilst reducing challenging behaviour in children.

You can access this programme via 1-1 support or via a link online whichever suits you. Come and join us on this programme!

will tell us what support best suits you and your family, we have a range of services available to you. We would always encourage your attendance at a group programme, this will give you the opportunity to meet parents who are going through similar life experiences to you who live in Caerphilly.

Non Violent Resistance

The programme aims to focus on parents or carers that are seeing children display violent or aggressive behaviours. This course runs infrequently in comparison to all our other courses. Many of the courses above will support you to gain strategies to support challenging behaviour. If you feel the NVR course is suited to your situation this should be discussed in your support plan.

Family Links Nurture Talking Teens and Talking Teens (Adapted)

The programme aims to help parents make sense of the teenage years and provide strategies to make their relationship with their teenager much more enjoyable. The Talking Teens programme encourages an approach to relationships that supports teenagers to develop good emotional and mental health – encouraging habits that will help them flourish and thrive throughout the rest of their lives.

We also provide a Talking Teens (adapted) programme for parents/carers of teenagers who have an additional need such as ASD, ADHD (pre and post-diagnosis). We offer this programme via 1-1 support sessions or via a group.

Throughout your time with CPSF, working on your action plan we would have got to know you and your family well. We recognise that there may be other support you require which sits outside what we can offer you. However, there are many support services within Caerphilly that may be able to support you. If your child is 0-7...

If you have a child aged 0-7 and feel you would like support then the Early Years team can support you from the time you find out you are pregnant all the way to when your child starts school. The Early Years team work closely with midwives, health visitors, school nurses, schools, childcare and all the early years practitioners who can support a whole range of provision online, or in person, depending on what you and your family need.

Circle of Security Parenting (COSP)

The Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) programme provides a map for parents/carers developed out of 50+ years of attachment research. What makes Circle of Security Parenting different is that the information is presented in a way that gives parents/carers a clear map of their child’s needs. But how you use the map is up to you.

COSP is not a list of techniques but it is a map with a mirror, that requires parents/carers to reflect on your own self taking note of your own childhood experiences. Circle of Security Parenting encourages parents/carers to reflect in order to move beyond being reactive parents/carers.

We currently offer COSP on a 1-1 basis however will be looking to deliver this on a group basis shortly. If you would be interested in accessing a COSP group please let your family support worker know.

I am a Grandparent who supports with looking after my grandchild(ren) are you able to offer me support?

Absolutely!!

As a Grandparent you can be a huge support to parents/carers. Whether it is supporting with childcare or helping to reinforce discipline strategies.

However sometimes it can be tough to be a grandparent as you may have differing parenting strategies and find yourself going against the parents' wishes which can cause confusion for the child(ren). We can offer you support so that you are all 'on the same page'.

We can provide support in a variety of ways, 1-1 support, access to one of our groups or via one of our Padlets. Please just let us know which is best for you.

English is not my first language, are you able to provide me with support?

If English is not your first language and you would like us to provide you with support in an alternative language we will happily do this.......

We can provide you with 1-1 support with the support of a translator and many of the resources that we provide alongside our support can be provided in a variety of languages.

I have a hearing disability are you able to offer me support?

Absolutely!!

If you have a hearing disability we can offer you support in a variety of ways;

* If you would like to receive 1-1 support we can arrange for a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter to be part of the support sessions.

* We can also provide support via text or emails rather than telephone.

My partner and I are a same-sex couple with a child, are we able to access support from the service?

The service provides support to ALL parents and carers of children 8-17 years across Caerphilly and welcomes the opportunity to provide support to families of same-sex.

I am a 'Single Dad' who needs support with managing my children's behaviour are you able to help?

We can offer you support in a variety of ways including 1-1 support, access to our online programmes or groups.

Sometimes it can just be nice to spend time with other dad's who are in a similar position. If you would be interested in meeting with other dad's please let us know :)

I would like to access a group to meet with other parents/carers however I have a physical disability which requires the use of a wheelchair, will I still be able to attend a group?

Absolutely!!

We make sure that any venue we use for our groups is accessible for all our parents and carers including wheelchair access/facilities. If you have a physical disability and there are adjustments that we can make please let us know.

A group is a great way to meet other parents and carers however if getting to a venue for a group is difficult we can provide you will access to one of our online groups.

We can also provide support via one of our online programme Padlets or via 1-1 support sessions within your home/preferred venue.

My religion is Muslim and we attend the Mosque for prayer and festivals, are you able to provide support around these commitments?

Understanding and Supporting Neurodiversity

This programme was put together by the CPSF team to meet the needs of families in Caerphilly, it is a bespoke group that provides information that increases knowledge and understanding for parents of a child who is on the ND assessment pathway. Parents are provided with a ‘toolbox’ of strategies that aim to foster positive communication, aid regulation and improve the whole family’s well-being.

The 6-week programme includes the following topics;

· What is neurodiversity?

· Understanding the brain of a child with neurodiverse needs

· Sensory processing/difficulties

· Resources and coping strategies to support emotional regulation

· Education needs/ specialist provision

· Support services and support groups
