Says: In excerpt A, Douglass repeatedly uses language associated with livestock such as "tamed me," "breaking me," and "brute."
Means: The way Covey treated Douglass stripped him of his humanity, leaving him like an animal.
Matters: By Douglass choosing to use this diction, he emphasizes the inhumane lifestyle that the slave owners put the slaves through.

Says: Those beautiful vessels, robed in purest white, so delightful to the eye of freemen, were to me so many shrouded ghosts, to terrify and torment me with thoughts of my wretched condition.

Means: Fredrick Douglass sees the ships as a symbol of freedom since they can travel anywhere much as like how ghosts and angels can.

Matters: Fredrick Douglass wants to become free like the ships since as a slave Douglass had been restricted from basic human rights of freedom.

Says: Douglass describes his conditions "never... too hard for us to work in the field," in order to convey the idea of the hardships of slavery from every angle.
Means: By discussing the horrible conditions in each aspect, Douglass illustrates a feeling of his struggles as a slave.
Matters: The description of every terrible detail shows that in no way was his situation ever bearable and enjoyable, which further supports his argument against slavery.

Says: Douglass emphasizes the purity of the white sales of vessels on the horizon and how to a man who is free would be delighted at the sight while these sails cause terror in the mind Douglass as a remind of his condition.

Means: For any free man they would be allowed to hop on a ship and travel the world to their hearts content. However for any slave the sight of these ships is only a reminder of how little freedom they have.

Matters: Douglass feels tortured by seeing ships free while he is trapped to his condition of being a slave

Says: "Work, work, work, was scarcely more the order of the day than of the night."
Means: Frederick Douglass writes that the slaves worked more in the night than in the day.
Matters: The use of repetition emphasizes the emotions the salves had towards their strenuous work in the fields. The salves were still people and they have their rights, so being put to work at night takes away from an aspect of their freedom.
