The hero is not dead but he is severely hurt as well as seeing Auska in the hospital bed. He believes that I was dead as well and he just mentally just tweaks out.

He is sent to talk with his father talking about how many lives are lost everyday with them fighting with the angels and it's horrible that they have to fight and lose so many people. All he wants is his father to support him and tell him that he's a good son but he doesn't even get that so he returns to reality to fight more hoping that he can still gain some sort of validation.
