Lastly I was wondering if you can have a look at avenues for finding student performers - one of the ideas suggested in the main discussion stream was to support local bands/artists from VCA/MCM (Now known as the Faculty of Fine Arts for some reason...) This is in case we decide this is one of the more feasible options considering our lack of budget. Student clubs are also another way to get in touch with artists; and perhaps Union House Theatre.

Thank you so much for your help!

- Anna (Artistic Curator Team)

Hey Anna, I can help you out with your second request. I’m happy contacting student artists myself to find out any information you need, or are you interested in finding out other methods of doing so? If you’re happy for me to find out information (like I’m doing with the other artists posted), can definitely do. If you want larger bodies to contact, I can get you the contact emails for various Melbourne Uni and Monash groups that manage/support artists. The turnaround for information from these groups might be slower, so let me know.
-Cat

Hi Cat, if you can just get us names and contact details please I think that would be best, as according to the project instructions the curator group is meant to contact artists, and we're still working on strategy and theme etc. I think if you can provide a central location for information, as you are doing with the other artists, then we can move forward with actually contacting them should we choose to. Does that make sense? So perhaps any listings for the larger UniMelb and Monash management groups and clubs would be good. E.g. I am a VCA student so I know about the artist booking service they provide but I'm not very in touch with the cultural groups, clubs and programs based at Parkville.

Thank you so much! Also if you have any ideas or requests for the program please pass them on to me! 😊 - Anna

Note from Cat:
Hey Anna! Let me know if you want more avenues or names of who's at the other end of emails. I can also check out clubs and Uni managers overseas.

Regarding extra ideas, I know it's not my place, but I think you're better suited (and more ethically suited) to try and get more seasoned artists to "donate" performances in order to help a bunch of students learn how to manage this kind of performance. Artists who are already in an education industry, for example, might already be this way inclined. Hey Caterina thanks so much for your research help! I'm a little bit confused by your suggestion. Can you clarify further please? Are you suggesting non student professional artists as performers to be a better option? Or artists who are working in education? Thanks -Anna

Hey Anna,
I was thinking professional artists who work in education, but I guess either or would be fine, just depends on the type of person?
For example, I would be much more comfortable approaching a University teacher who is also an artist, explaining our situation and asking if they'd be willing to perform for free, rather than approaching a student artist who I know is living off of their work, and asking for something I know they probably can't afford (though everyone is different, and I am stereotyping). Having said that, I would definitely not approach a well known artist who's working in the performance industry full time (someone suggested Sia for example) and ask them to donate, unless I knew them personally. Not sure if that's clearer? Happy to elaborate.
-Cat

Hey Cat thanks for explaining. It's always a tricky issue trying to figure out when it is appropriate to ask artists to work for free or non-Equity award level fees. The question is about making it a fair exchange. Thank you for the idea about getting artist teachers on staff on board. In my experience the staff at UniMelb and VCA are very overworked and underpaid for their time, so to ask them to donate more time to students and a course that they might have no involvement with could be difficult. However depending on the person and the commitment we ask of them, it's possible. Similar to inviting student performers or professionals. This is a decision that I think the curator group needs to figure out ASAP. In the meantime I guess it will be great to find out fundraising options! To do our job as curators we need more information about what our resources are. Thank you so much for all your effort! - Anna

From Iulian (Stoneclap): Some artists might value a lot the exposure, especially e.g. known professional artists in Europe/US/etc, but not as known in Australia. They might not perform for free, but it's likely they'll be happy to accept a reasonable fee if we can put them out there to the Australian audience. E.g. that's how we could afford to bring (https://www.facebook.com/moonlightbreakfast/) to one of our concerts in the past.

I am looking into organisational issues for unincorporated groups, Stephanie is looking into commercial limitations with spaces on campus, and Rosemary is (maybe) looking into alternative funding options, so this may be moot in the end, but food for thought? Anyway, long rant over, information is below. :)

An alternative could be connecting through Telstra hotspots. I am sure there is technology that would support; it will probably add to our expenses, however.
We can attend to this matter after the Curators team meeting on Friday.
-Amir-

From Iulian(Stoneclap):
We have run events for QV Market over a 4.5G network, so it's doable. I'd say, if the location/setup is truly special and everyone is super excited about it, we could go for it, but if not, sticking with the more reliable Fibre connection will give us more reliable sound/video quality.
