The Berlin Wall, still standing today, is one of the many grim symbols of the Cold War. It was a physical barrier with the intention to prevent East Berliners from escaping communism and going to the democratic West Berlin. The wall, built on August 13, 1981, and standing 12 feet high and 96 miles long, divided neighborhoods, streets and even houses and families. It was fortified by barbed wire, a back wall, guard dogs, watchtowers and searchlights. If someone wanted to escape, they had to dig tunnels, break through with trucks, fly across with balloons or forge a passport. Numerous people tried to escape, and 125 were killed trying. This immediately increased tensions between the Soviet Union and the occupying allied nations. In the long run, this symbol showed that East Berlin (GDR) was forced to imprison it's citizens. Anti-Communist leaders, like President Reagan, never got tired of saying, "Mister Gor, tear down this wall". Eventually, the wall fell, and on November 9, 1989, East Berlin citizens were free to cross the border separating them. The fall of the Berlin Wall not only allowed Europeans to reunite, but also signified the fall of communism.

Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971) was the Premier, or head of the government, during the Cold War. The death of Joseph Stalin in 1953 launched a fierce struggle over who his successor would be and how he would be picked.
While Stalin was still alive and in power, Khrushchev played an important role in strengthening Stalin's dictatorship over the Soviet Union.
In 1938, Khrushchev, took the top position in the Communist party. He wanted Communism to spread, yet he disagreed with many of Stalin's methods.
Khrushchev was a major role during the Cold War, as he was involved in many events. He was Premier when the Space Race began. He was Premier during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During this last event, he agreed to the Test Ban Treaty and set up a hotline with the US to prevent another incident like this.
It is also known that Khrushchev was the main influence behind the Berlin Wall. He was indirectly addressed by Kennedy during his famous speech in Berlin. Here, Kennedy was saying to anyone who thought communism was a good thing, to come to Berlin, because they would still remain free of communism.

Speech: https://archive1.jfklibrary.org/JFKWHA/1963/JFKWHA-200-001/JFKWHA-200-001-AUdctm_pm_25155409.
Explanation: This is John F. Kennedy's speech in Berlin 2 years after the Berlin Wall was built. This memorial speech was one of Kennedy's most famous speeches.
West Berlin was, at this point, surrounded on all sides by Communist East Germany. They felt that they too would soon fall to communism.
In this short speech, Kennedy attacked the communist system, and despite his poor language skills, managed to say a few lines in German, including his famous quote: "Ich bin ein Berliner".
He mentioned how democracy wasn't perfect, but they had not yet built a wall to keep their people in, like East Berlin had with theirs.
And although Kennedy did not live long enough to see his dream, for Berlin "to be joined as one", he is still a very admired figure today.

The Berlin wall didn't impact the US as much as it did the citizens of West Berlin. The US just saw this as a threat because communism was spreading. They did help with the Berlin airlift, which helped the citizens after the blockade. However, they didn't feel it as much as the actual Berliners did.
West Berlin was divided, literally. The wall divided families and people from their jobs. Some Berliners even criticized the U.S. for their failure to respond in time.
When people tried crossing the wall, they were met with more trouble: The wall was fortified and crossing was almost impossible. 125, at least, were killed trying to cross the wall in order to get to their families. There was even a point where the Soviets blockaded Berlin, and in order to help, the US used an airlift to get supplies through. Otherwise, the Berliners would have probably died.

Significance Today

The Berlin wall is still standing, or at least part of it, today. It is a grim symbol of the Cold War and the battle between freedom and communism.
In the present day, there are still many walls that separate people from all over the world. For example, India and Pakistan have had a rivalry since 1947. Since then, these nuclear-armed nations have had 3 wars, including one over the territory of Kashmir. In 2003, India began to build a fenced border with Pakistan after a cease fire agreement.
Another current problem similar to the Berlin Wall is the US-Mexico wall President Trump is trying to build. Yes this may be controversial, but it could have the same effects that the Berlin Wall had. It would be splitting families that are living on both sides of the border. It would interrupt their communication and help that families send each other while living far away. There are still many "walls" that separate people, physical or not.
