Song Explanation

This song relates to Beneatha. As a woman of her time period, it was very hard to be successful and seen as someone worthy. This song explains how boys and girls act and get treated differently. In the play Walter Lee does not think that she should go to college, because like the song says, it's different for girls.

Beneatha is brave.

One character trait that Beneatha has is bravery. She is brave for many reasons. When Asagai comes and brings her the headdress he says that her hair is unnatural, so she decides to wear her hair natural when George comes over. When she takes the headdress off, everyone is surprised. Ruth says while touching her hair, "Girl, you done lost your natural mind!? Look at your head!" Page 80. She is brave because she had the nerve to do something no one else would do, not in that time period anyway.

Poem Explanation

This poem relates to Beneatha because it is exactly the stereotype she wants to escape. This poem is about how women used to work all day around the house, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of kids, and not having time to rest and take care of themselves. Beneatha wants to grow up to be a doctor, to have a family that relies on her instead of her having to rely on them.

Theme in Raisin in the Sun

One theme in Raisin In The Sun is that family is the most important thing. We know this because of the way that Walter acts when he is faced with a very important decision. Moving, or not moving? "What I am telling you is that we called you over here to tekk you that we are very proud and that this--Travis come here. This is my son, and he makes the sixth generation our family in this country. And we have all thought about your offer---And we have decided to move into our house because my father--my father--he earned it for us brick by brick. We don't want to make no trouble for nobody or fight no causes, and we will try to be good neighbors. And that's all we got to say about that. We don't want your money" This shows that family is most important to him, more than that mans money ever would.

One theme in Fences is that family is the most important thing. We know this because of how Rose treats her family and the other people around her. Even after Troy cheats on her with Alberta, and fathers her child, she decides to stay with him. She even helps raise Raynell after Alberta dies in labor. This shows us that family is everything, even when there is every reason for it not to be.

Is Beneatha strong or weak?

I do sympathize with Beneatha, and for a few reasons. She is a very strong person, but she doesn't know how to use it correctly. She is strong because she wants to fight. She wants to fight for what she wants. She wants to be a doctor and she will not let anyone get in her way of doing that. But she is also weak in some ways. In the book, she let Asagai tell her that she should leave her hair natural. She is weak, but not in the way that makes her less strong. Her weaknesses have nothing to do with why and how she is going to be a doctor. I sympathize with her because she does not yet know how to handle herself

Fences vs. Raisin In the Sun

The movie Fences and the play Raisin in the Sun are very similar. They have many of the same themes. Their characters are also compatible. The two stories were set in a similar time and a similar setting. The stories were set in suburban areas in the 1950's. The theme of both of the stories are that family is the most important and that family comes first.
Rose and Ruth are similar; they both would do anything they needed to in order to keep a roof above their families head and food on the table. Troy and Walter Lee are also similar; they both have done things in their stories to mess up their families, but ended up doing the right thing in the end. Corey and Beneatha are alike; neither one of them want to do what their families say. They both want to be bold and follow their own dreams. As you can see, the characters in both of the stories are very similar.
