Mariam:

She kept on complaining about having the same turnip soup for three days even after she was told by her parents that she should be grateful because many kids aren’t even able to get food at all.
Insisting because…

She insisted on being apart of the conversation about the Taliban and their relationship with her father, Habib. Even though her family said no in the beginning because it was a mature conversation with content she might not understand or be comfortable with talking about.

When she is with her brother, Fadi, trying to get through the crowd and into the truck, she starts to worry about her Barbie, Gulmina and where to keep her which doesn’t seem bad or dangerous but then she tries to stop Fadi so he can put it in his backpack. This slows down the process of getting to the truck. Then when they are nearly there, she lets go of Gulmina and insists on getting her back even though their father and her brother are telling her to leave the Barbie. But she continued to try to get her which led to her letting go of Fadi’s hand and then the truck leaves without her, so she is left alone in the crowd.

Habib:

When the Taliban want Habib to join them, Habib really wants to refuse the offer. But he knows that the Taliban would then arrest him, or worse. So to protect him and his family. He decides to leave Afghanistan and go back to the US, where he got his Ph.D. Also, everyone says Habib is smart. Because in the US he went to university, unlike everyone in his family.

“Everyone thinks it’s their fault she’s gone. But it’s my fault, not anyone else’s. I’m the one who doesn’t deserve to belong to this family. I’m the one who’s torn it apart.” (72)

This is something Fadi thinks after he hears another one of his family members take the blame for losing Mariam. Fadi deep down thinks it’s his fault because he’s the one who let go of her hand, leaving her behind. He believes he is the person to blame, even though he couldn’t really do anything different in that situation. He tried his best, and so did everyone else. This quote shows that Fadi feels responsible, guilty, out of place, and he feels like a disappointment to his family. He feels as if he doesn’t belong and that he doesn;t deserve to be a part of his family.

Some of the secondary characters are:

Habib affects Fadi in a leadership way. He is the leader of the family and he is kind of Fadi’s role model. Habib and Fadi are also pretty close. Fadi finds himself questioning and wondering of Habibs’ decisions were all the correct things to do. He sometimes found himself wishing Habib had never moved the family back to Kabul in the first place.

There are secondary characters in every book, including the book I’m reading right now, titled Shooting Kabul. There is Fadi’s(Main character) family, which includes Habib, Noor, Zafoona, and the one who was lost in Afghanistan, Mariam. Fadi feels like he was the one who's responsible for leaving Mariam behind, but so does everyone else. Hearing this, Fadi just thinks that that strengthens the fact that he is responsible.
