Even for people at a healthy weight, a poor diet is associated with major health risks that can cause illness and even death. These include heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer. By making smart food choices, you can help protect yourself from these health problems. The risk factors for adult chronic diseases, like hypertension and type 2 diabetes, are increasingly seen in younger ages, often a result of unhealthy eating habits and increased weight gain.

What the Health clearly demonstrated the impacts a daily diet can have on our lives and the planet. We learned that while killing and harming animals, we directly harm and kill ourselves in one way or another. Consequently, even the Canadian government or health organizations are disguising for the hidden truths behind food production in order to promote agriculture and livestock by companies. We watched that even hospitals benefit off of our illnesses and diseases, which brings me to my main question here. Why is the Canadian medical school curriculum limiting soon-to-be doctors understanding of nutrition? Are courses about nutrition even included? If we do not have enough nutrition courses in the curriculum, who should we rely on for accurate medical information and how does this limited understanding of nutrition effect society.

Canadian medical students are lacking adequate education in nutrition which shows in a survey
done by the Canadian Medical School Association. According to a survey distributed to 9
universities across Canada in 2015 including University of Ottawa, Toronto, and McMaster
(Collier, 2015). Of the 933 students who responded to the survey, 87.2% said their undergraduate
medical program should dedicate more time to nutrition education.

Many survey respondents said they were somewhat comfortable in their knowledge of basic
nutrition concepts and the role nutrition plays in disease prevention. However, they also said they
lacked sufficient knowledge about the role nutrition plays in treating diseases, are ill-equipped to
counsel patients on their nutrient requirements across all stages of their lives and have trouble
identifying credible sources of nutrition information (Collier, 2015).
Therefore, this relates back to What the Health because we are simply perpetuating the cycle of
making patients suffer in pain through medicinal and different treatment options when in the first
place we aren’t even educating soon-to-be doctors efficiently in the number one leading problem
of all diseases, which is nutrition or how food is cons

If we were to look at statistics from another country, most medical schools in the United States
such as Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis or New York University of
Medicine teach less than 25 hours of nutrition over four years or no nutrition electives at all . Also, less than 20% of medical schools have a single course required in nutrition. Therefore, these findings show us that the problem of limited nutrition knowledge within the
medical curriculum is not only widespread at home, however other nations as well. In order to
overcome these issues, institutions like the government and health organizations need to prioritize
the public’s health opposed to profit. Society as a whole needs to be more educated on these issues
from a critical perspective through initiatives such as raising more awareness in schools, or similar
documentaries, and large media platforms. We can only eliminate this problem if we find the right
solutions to it, rather than adding onto a toxic cycle of manipulating society in order to gather more
wealth for large organizations, which includes universities, medical schools, and health institutions.

Looking at some of our close by med schools such as the one in University of Toronto, soon-to-be-doctors are only given between 20-30 hours of nutrition knowledge from their 4 years. Also most shockingly, nutrition courses are not prerequisites for our soon-to-be-doctors. Not only is this the case in Canada but it is the same in the U.S.
