This political cartoon by J. Keppler, printed in Puck Magazine, 1904, depicts the Standard Oil Corporation as a giant octopus that is grabbing many things, including Washington, D.C., politicians, and smaller oil companies. Standard Oil''s monstrous power is shown, reflecting its influence on Congress & the U.S. Supreme Court. The artist depicts Standard Oil as a giant threat, but from the perspective of a monopolist (e.g. Rockefeller) controlling an entire industry was great! On another positive note, (if monopolies are felt to be a negative effect of industrialization), one could mention that Standard Oil was deemed a monopoly in 1906 under the Sherman Anti-trust Act of 1890 and broken up into 3 smaller companies. While clearly negative in intent, the complexity of the cartoon allows for different interpretations, depending on what one argues is a "positive" effect.

This cartoon shows Rockefeller's dominant Standard Oil Company being defeated by a competing corporation: Tidewater Pipeline. The Tidewater Pipeline company changed the way oil was delivered and this hurt Rockefeller's monopoly on oil. The cartoon shows the decreasing influence of the dominating corporations in the late 1800s.

In general, the industrial age brought prosperity to both the rich and the poor, but in the end, the gap between the two became greater. In most factories, laborers faced low wages along with high rent that put them further in to poverty. Unfair corporate managers did nothing to solve this, and instead kept on working them harder and harder.
