    • The apostles choose Matthias to complete the number 12 because the idea was that there must be one apostle for each tribe of Israel. He was chosen using a casting lot, it is when the apostles put the names of the candidates on rocks and put them in a put, and shook them until one rock fell out.  The name on it will be the chosen one.
  • What was this Apostle doing before he met Jesus?
    • The early church was often confused about Matthias’ identity, which made it hard for us to learn more about him. Most of the information we “know” about Matthias is just speculation. 
  • What stories do we have about this Apostle in the gospels?
    • Matthias was a good candidate to become the twelfth apostle because his name means “gift of yahweh” which means gift of God.
  • According to tradition, what did this Apostle do after the Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost?

- Before Andrew met Jesus, he was a fisherman.
- In the gospel, it talks about the stories when Andrew was called to be one of Jesus' apostles. It also talks about the stories of when Andrew was a fisherman with his brother Simon Peter. 
- After the Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost, Andrew focused on his apostolic efforts in Eastern Europe and found the first Christian church in Byzantium. He died a martyr in Patras, Roman Empire, crucified upside down on an X-shaped cross. He is now known as the patron saint of fishermen.

~ Resurrection, the first pope of the new church. Ascension was when Peter took the place of Judas. After the pentecost, Peter became the leader of the Apostles.

Jesus goes to Galilee and finds Philip and tells him to "follow me" and Philip does. These words "follow me" often ring in a Christian's ear. 
What was this Apostle doing before he met Jesus?
Philip was one of Jesus' 12 disciples. Originally from Bethsaida, a fishing town on the Sea of Galilee, he ended up following Jesus, though he was probably a disciple, or follower, of John the Baptist first.
What stories do we have about this Apostle in the gospels?
Philip met Nathanael, and said unto him, We have now met Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph, whom Moses spoke of in the law, and the prophets spoke of. 46And Nathanael said unto him, What good thing cometh out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, "Come and see.
Philip is described in detail in the Gospel of John. The other Gospels only mention that he was one of the "Twelve.　He was from Bethsaida, the same area as Andrew and Peter, and became a disciple of Jesus at the same time. Like Andrew, he is thought to have been a disciple of John the Baptist, who was a forerunner of Christ.

However, Judas went with the power and promises of God.  He preached a message of repentance.  He healed sicknesses and drove out demons (Mark 6:13).
- Before meeting Jesus, Judas followed John the Baptist before he became one of the twelve disciples of Christ
- Church tradition holds that Thaddeus founded a church at Edessa and was crucified there as a martyr. One legend suggests his execution occurred in Persia. It is also said that he is a cousin of Jesus himself.
- After the Resurrection, he preached as a missionary. After the Ascension and Pentecost, Judas started preaching the gospel in Mesopotamia, Syria and Persia.

Before meeting Jesus, James was a simple fisherman with his father, brother, and colleague, Simon (Peter). He and his brother were also said to be disciples of John the Baptist before becoming apostles. During apostleship, he and John earned the title of "Sons of Thunder" for their fiery temper, which once caused them to be rebuked by Jesus for trying to call fire and misfortune down on a town that refused to welcome Jesus. James was also one of only three apostles allowed to witness the Transfiguration. After Jesus' death and Resurrection, James went on to spread the good word to Spain, where his remains are said to be, and he is the patron saint. He was the first apostle to martyred, and his beheading by King Herod Agrippa is accounted for in Acts 12. The above picture depicts him with a staff (usually with a bottle attached) as he often is, as it has become a sort of symbol of him. Fun Fact: He was most likely given the title, "the Greater" because he was taller or older than the other James and they needed a way to distinguish their names.

    3. Stories: 
    • Jesus sent Peter and John to prepare for the last supper. 
    • John was the witnesser of when Peter healed the man in the temple and preached before the Jewish leaders of Jerusalem. He traveled to Samaria to grant the gift of the Holy Ghost upon the Samaritans who Philip taught and baptized.  
    • John, his brother James, Peter and Andrew left their fishing duties when Jesus called them to follow him. 
    4. After the Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost. 
    • John was the one who was at the foot of the cross when Jesus entrusted Mary into his care, never leaving Jesus’s side. 
    • After the ascension, John traveled to Asia Minor, telling people about Jesus and founding many new churches. 
    • After the Pentecost, John is mentioned by Paul as being one of the pillars of the church. He traveled to Rome and was exiled in Patmos. He is thought to have gone to Ephesus, where he lived the rest of his life. He wrote his gospel.

    ~He was originally a tax collector which is usually looked down upon because it was thought of as betrayal. They were known to tell people to give more than they own and pocket the extra. Matthew was a story from the “bad tax collector” to Jesus’ apostle.

    Before meeting Jesus, he was most likely a fisherman.

    When Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha, was sick and dying Jesus wanted to go see him and resurrect him. The disciples didn't want to go to Judea, fearing the danger of being harassed. But Thomas said to the rest of the disciples "let us also go, that we may die with him".

    After the Resurrection, some disciples see Jesus and go to tell Thomas, who wasn't with them at the time. Thomas demands for proof saying, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." A week later, the Apostles were together when Jesus came in and told Thomas to "stop doubting and believe."
    After the Pentecost, Thomas went to spread the gospel in India, where he was later martyred.
