2.     To what extent do we need evidence to support our beliefs in different areas of knowledge? (November 2010 / May 2011)

 An example of shared knowledge can be a specific concept in math such as binomial theorem. The theorem has been proved by multiple mathematicians and has been developed over time with their knowledge. 

An example of procedural knowledge would be learning how to ride a bicycle, as after understanding the mechanics and learning how to ride the bicycle, this knowledge stays with you.

An example of propositional knowledge could be the geocentric model. While the geocentric model was relatively popular until the 16th century, it soon got disproved and replaced with the heliocentric model. It was relevant until other information disproved it. 

An example of non - propositional knowledge would be knowing and believing that the sun would rise every morning. Since it is an irrefutable fact that is proved and backed up with scientific evidence and shared knowledge, it is non-propositional knowledge. 

An example of dispersed knowledge could be one person investing into the stocks of a certain company while the other person sells off their stocks from the same company. The person investing money and buying stocks is doing so on the presumption that the stocks will rise, while the other person selling their stocks is doing so on the presumption that the stocks will fall in price. As they both have different information and different understandings of the situation, they are an example of dispersed knowledge. 

An example of situated knowledge would be that 1+1 = 2. This knowledge is ingrained into most people and is the mathematical basis on which they think.

An example of tacit knowledge would be learning how to perform a good freestyle dance. Learning how to do one successfully requires knowledge of different dance moves, understanding of the music’s rhythm and beats, ability to appeal to the audience, and also the ability to improve and come up with moves quickly. All of these are skills that need to be practiced and improved through time and experience.

·       Procedural Knowledge: Calculating the molar mass of an atom because it is a knowledge I gained by repeated practice

believes that distinguishes him, but how and why he believes it. His beliefs are 

based on evidence, not on authority or intuition." We always have to prove something with proper evidence because there will always be someone who will oppose and question our beliefs.  Evidence is something that paves the path to 

proof. This proof can be further used to strengthen a belief that we hold; this can 

then be considered a personal truth, a fact, a law, an axiom, a theorem, or 

whichever other word describes our evidence.  We do not accept beliefs to be true unless strong evidence is provided.

Through technology we see the world from a completely different/ new perspective which is why I believe that technology has radically transformed the way we see things and is not just an extension to our senses.
