There are six barriers to effective communication. They are language barriers, psychological barriers, physiological barriers, physical barriers, systematic barriers, and attitudinal barriers. The three that stood out to me the most were the language barriers, psychological barriers and physiological barriers. When people speak a different language, it can be hard for them to understand your message through your communication. If the terms that are used are unfamiliar to the listener, that could be a barrier between communicating with each other, "Regional colloquialisms and expressions may be misinterpreted or even considered offensive" (Strategies to Resolve Conflicts, 11). If you use a lot of jargon in your speech, they might not be able to understand what you are saying. Psychological barriers deal with a persons mood or feelings at the time of the speech. Self-esteem, anger, and stress all contribute to psychological barriers, "If someone is stressed, they may be preoccupied by personal concerns and not as receptive to the message as if they were not stressed" (Strategies to Resolve Conflicts, 11). Depending on what mood they are in, that mood can effect the way that they are receiving the message that you are trying to deliver. The final barrier that stood out to me was the physiological barriers. One physiologic barrier could be reduced hearing. These barriers affect the physical state of the receiver of the message, "Physiological barriers may result from the receiver's physical state"(Strategies to Resolve Conflicts, 12). This could affect the receiver of the message by not allowing him to grasp the whole message that the speaker is trying to convey. All of these are barriers and they all contribute to blocking the way of how the message will be received.

I have so much to do on the weekends that my day is packed, all the time. I am always stressed on the weekend, and it is only relieved by getting through one thing at a time. I went to volunteer at the food bank this past weekend and my day was so full I had no time to stop home and take a break. I was trying to listen to what I had to do, because it was my first time being there. However, I was thinking of what I had to get done that day the rest of the day, so I only caught part of what I was supposed to do. I should have asked for clarification before I started to work, but I didn't. I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out what I was supposed to do and I kept getting corrected by the other volunteer's working there. By the end, I figured out what I was supposed to do and some of my stress went away. I should have asked for him to go back over the directions so that I knew what I had to do the first time. It could have saved me from being stressed a lot of time.
