Melina (Amalia-Maria) Merkouri (Athens, October 18, 1920 – New York, March 6, 1994) was a Greek actress and anti-dictatorship politician. She was one of the most important Greek women of the 20th century. She was a multifaceted personality. Leading fighter of the Republic in the fight against the junta (1967-1974).
They described her as "the last Greek goddess" and "woman - flame". Her whole life was full of dreams, hopes, anxieties and struggles.

She was a Great theater and film actress with an international career and performances recorded in the pages of the Seventh Art. A politician who marked the culture of Greece with her presence. Dido Sotiriou (1909-2004) was a novelist and journalist. She was born in Aydini, Asia Minor, daughter of Evangelos Pappa and Marianthis Papadopoulou. In 1919 she settled with her family in Smyrna and after the disaster of 1922 they fled to Greece.
In Athens, she completed her encyclical studies. She studied at the French Institute of Athens and in 1937 attended French literature courses at the Sorbonne University for a few months. From 1936 he turned professionally to journalism. She collaborated with the magazine "Woman" (as editor-in-chief) and the newspapers "Neos Kosmos" and "Rizospastis" (editor-in-chief since 1944), while during the German occupation she collaborated with many Greek women of the resistance. She attended the League of Nations conference in Geneva in 1935, where she met Lenin's companion Alexandra Kolodai, and the founding conference of the Democratic Women's Federation in Paris in 1945.
He first appeared in literature in 1959 with the publication of the novel "The Dead Wait". Her works were translated into many foreign languages. A part of her work has met with success abroad, and especially in Turkey. Dido Sotiriou belongs to the Greek prose writers of the interwar period. Her work moves within the framework of realism with a strong presence of the autobiographical element and the author's emotional participation in the adventures of her heroes, and draws its themes from the Asia Minor disaster, the civil war period and the post-civil war period of Greek history.
She was honored with the Abdi Ipektsi Greek-Turkish friendship award in 1983, the Special State Prize for Literature in 1989, the Athens Academy Award in 1990 and the Commander of the Order of the Phoenix in 1995.
In 2001 the Writers' Society established in her honor the "Dido Sotiriou" award, which is awarded "to a foreign or Greek writer who with her writing highlights the communication of peoples and cultures through cultural diversity".
She died in Athens on September 23, 2004.

Anna Synodinou was born in Loutraki, Corinthia on November 21, 1927. She was the eighth child of her family, which came from Amorgos. She finished high school in Athens and then studied at the Drama School of the National Theater.
She first appeared on stage in 1948 in Edmond Rostan's play "Cyrano de Bergerac".

She taught at the theater schools of the National Theatre, Pelos Katselis, the Artistic Society of Athens and the Athens Conservatory.
She has been honored with the decorations of Efpoia and the Order of Phoenix of the Hellenic State, as well as with the medal of the city of Athens.
She has also been awarded by foreign countries for her artistic contribution (Denmark, France, Lebanon, Italy). She is the author of the autobiography "Persons and Persons" (Vlasi Publications, 1998) and the book of theatrical memories "Ainos to the worthy" (Kastaniotis, 1999).
Anna Synodinou marked the Greek theater with her commanding presence and her acting skills on the stage. "She dug deep into the great texts of ancient tragedy, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Pirandello, Lorca and brought to the surface and embodied the passions, joys, betrayals, dreams, illusions, expectations, hatreds and romantic anxieties of the traumatic experiences of the theater gallery of heroines" he writes in a text by the theater critic Kostas Georgousopoulos.

Maria Kallas (1923-1977), the leading Greek-American soprano, was the figure who marked the twentieth century and the entire musical firmament with her vocal and musical intelligence. Katina Paxinou was the first Greek actress who managed to stand in Hollywood and even on her own terms, to excel in theater and cinema in Europe, to stand out as a tragic figure of global scope.
Aikaterini Konstantopoulou, as was her maiden name, was born on December 17, 1900 in Piraeus and was the daughter of the flour manufacturer Vassilis Konstantopoulos.
She studied music and classical singing at the Geneva Conservatory, as well as at similar schools in Berlin and Vienna. She made her debut on the Stage of the Municipal Theater of Piraeus in 1920, performing the main role in the opera "Sister Beatrice" by Dimitris Mitropoulos.
From 1932 to 1940, she appeared at the National Theatre, where she performed roles that established her as a leading actress on the Greek stage.
With the Stage of the National Theater she will appear in London, Frankfurt and Berlin, performing the role of Electra in Sophocles' play of the same name, Gertrude in Shakespeare's "Hamlet", Mrs Alving in Ibsen's "Vampires". During the war he settled in the USA, where he appeared on Broadway and performed great roles in the cinema, with which she gained international recognition.
She was selective in her film choices, hence her only 11 films. For her performance, she was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1944, while in 1949 she was awarded the Cocteau Award at the Biarritz Film Festival for her performance in Dudley Nichols' film Mourning Suits Elektra.
She was decorated with the Golden Grand Order of George I and the Grand Order of West Germany. She was also honored with the title of Official of Letters and Arts of France and with the "Isabella d'Este" Award.
Katina Paxinou died on February 22, 1973 in Athens, at the age of 72.

Elli Lampeti was a leading theater and film actress. She was born on April 13, 1926 in Vilia, Attica. Her real name was Elli Loukou. Her father was Kostas Loukos, a tavern owner, and her mother was Anastasia Stamati. Her grandfather, known as Captain Stamatis, had fought on the side of Kolokotronis, during the revolution of 1821.
In 1950 she married Marios Ploritis. The following years were a battle with terminal illness, from which she had been afflicted since 1967. She did not give up and continued to perform in the theater, receiving impressive reviews. Her last appearance was in 1981, in the play "Sarah - Children of a lesser god", where she wonderfully played the role of the deaf and mute Sarah. Shortly thereafter, her health deteriorated. She lost her voice and finally breathed her last on September 3, 1983, in the American hospital where she was being treated.
Her life was written in a book by her good friend Freddy Germanos and became a bestseller, 13 years after her death.

Kiki Dimoula was a distinguished and multi-awarded

poetess of the second post-war generation, with a great appeal to the reading public. Her maiden name was Vasiliki Radou. She was born in Athens and was originally from Messina. She married the poet and civil engineer Athos Dimoulas, with whom she had two children, Dimitris and Elsi.
She made her appearance in letters in 1952, at the age of 19, with the poetry collection "Poems", but after a while she repudiated that first collection. The themes that dominate her poems are absence, decay, loss, loneliness and time. Her official entry into poetry was in 1956, with the collection "Erevos".
The poetic speech of Kiki Dimoulas followed an evolutionary path, with influences from Cavafy's poetry at its beginning and with key characteristic elements the logoplastic tendency and the figurative energy.
Dimoula's reflection, clearly existential, expresses her agonizing search for the meaning of perishable human life.
The themes that dominate her poems are absence, decay, loss, loneliness and time. Elements of her writing are the fast and sharp verse, the ironic tone with the use of the words of cleaner, technology, slang and even neologisms, the playful mood with the quotation of opposite or similar words, the deliberate carelessness in the syntax and the repetitions.
In 1972 she was honored with the 2nd State Prize for Poetry for the collection "The Little Bit of the World", in 1989 with the State Prize for Poetry for the collection "Happy Never", in 1996 with the Urani Prize of the Academy of Athens for the collection "Adolescence of oblivion" and in 2001 with the Excellence in Letters of the Academy of Athens, for her entire work.
In the same year, she was awarded the Golden Cross of the Order of Honor by the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Stephanopoulos.

Her poems have been translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Bulgarian, German and Swedish.

The pioneer Thalia Flora-Karavia (1871-1960) is a completely unique case in the history of Greek painting, but at the same time a bold and fearless woman, who twice found herself in wars, in order to record what was happening in order to publicize it back home.

She worked for a year as a teacher, but her inclination towards painting led her in 1895 to Munich, where she studied at private schools. She traveled to various European cities and in 1907, during a trip to Egypt, she married the journalist Nikolaos Karavia. Remaining in Alexandria for thirty years, she developed a rich artistic activity and founded an Art School which she directed.
In the war of 1912-1913 she closely followed the operations of the Greek army by keeping a diary and capturing various snapshots, which she published in 1936 in a book entitled "Impressions from the war of 1912-1913. Macedonia-Epirus". She also covered the Asia Minor Campaign and the operations on the Albanian front, depicting the life of the soldiers, locations and monuments.
For her work and action she was honored with the silver medal of the Academy of Athens in 1945 and with the Cross of the Order of Eupoia in 1954.
Starting her exhibition activity in 1898, she presented her work in a number of individual and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
In her work, which covers almost all thematic areas – portraits, landscapes, still lifes and ethnographic scenes – and is characterized by flawless design, balanced composition and sensitivity to color rendering, she initially followed the conservative rules of the Academy, while later she adopted the teachings of impressionism and ruralism. She also illustrated literary texts and designed the lottery tickets of the National Fleet.
She was one of the most important and productive Greek painters. Her work has not yet been fully catalogued. It is certain, however, that her oil paintings exceed 2.500 while the number of her drawings and watercolors is also large. She became equally well known for her approximately 500 portraits.

Maria Polydouri was poetess of the neo-romantic school from Kalamata. She was born on April 1, 1902 and was the daughter of the philologist Evgenios Polydouris and Kyriaki Markatou, a woman with early feminist concerns. She completed her high school studies in Kalamata, having previously attended the schools of Gytheio and Filiatra.
In the letters she appears at the age of 14, with the folk song "Mother's pain". It refers to the death of a sailor, who was washed up by the waves on the shores of Filiatra and is influenced by the frenzied obituaries she heard in Gythio. At the age of 16, she was appointed to the Prefecture of Messinia, following a competition, and at the same time showed a lively interest in the women's issue. In 1920, she lost her father and mother within forty days.
In 1921 she was transferred to the Prefecture of Athens and at the same time enrolled in the Law School of the University of Athens. In her service she will meet her colleague and fellow artist Kostas Karyotakis and between them will develop an intense love, which will last a while, but will play a decisive role in her life and work.
Maria Polydouri belongs to the literary generation of the 20th, which cultivated the feeling of unsatisfiedness and decadence. Love and death are the two axes around which her poetry revolves. It is full of spring lyricism that breaks out in deep sadness and sometimes in heartbreak, with obvious influences from Kariotakis and the manic obituaries. Polydouri's emotional and emotional outbursts sometimes cover the technical weaknesses and lyrical easiness of her poetry.
Maria Polydouri also left two prose works: her "Diary" and an untitled novella, with which she mercilessly satirizes the conservatism and hypocrisy of her time.

Zoe Karelli was born in 1901 in Thessaloniki, in a wealthy family of the city. She was involved in learning foreign languages and music, while for a while she attended Philology courses at the University of Thessaloniki.
She was introduced to letters in 1935 from the columns of the magazine To Trito Mati, where she published the essay Moods. Her poetic presence is intense in the decade 1948-1958.
In total, she published twelve poetry collections, five plays and many essays, while many of her texts are published in literary magazines. Her poems were translated into many foreign languages.
She also dealt with literary translation, mainly works by Thomas Eliot, while her essay work is also notable, mainly around literature and theater.
Zoe Karelli was awarded the 2nd State Poetry Prize for the poetry collection Kassandra (1956) and the 1st State Poetry Prize for Poems 1940-1973 (1974). In 1982 she became the first woman to be named a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens. In 1985, the President of the Republic, Christos Sargetakis, awarded her the Phoenix Medal of the Hellenic Republic. The Faculty of Philosophy of the AUTH awarded her an honorary doctorate in 1988.
She served for many years on the artistic committee of the State Theater of Northern Greece.
A thoughtful person with varied interests, Zoe Karelli creatively assimilated the Greek (ancient, Byzantine and new) and European literary tradition. The metaphysical problem and existential anxiety are constant axes of her poetry, combined with feminine sensitivity. She transferred the problematic of her poetry to her plays.
Zoi Karelli died in Thessaloniki on July 16, 1998, at the age of 97.
