Consumerism in post colonial societies are often neocolonial tools used to keep African countries poor and dependent. Increasing dependency on globalized goods in post colonial societies leads to resource depletion, environmental degradation and social inequalities. In the context of Ivory Coast, the rapid globalization and desire for imported goods in addition with the CFA Franc by France meant that Ivory Coast had large issues with inequality and resource depletion.

From the conversation it is evident that Bintou is usually the one encouraging her friends to hang around, and she is working towards her goal of finding different men to extract money and fame from them. On the other hand, Adjoua is relatively conservative and focuses more on studying than playing. Their relationship shows that how Bintou can shape Adjoua's actions through words and expressions. In the last panel, camera angle changed to position Adjoua in a dominant position, revealing that this is mainly about how Adjoua is faking the impression that she is going out for completing her math work to brother.

The Ivory Coast has a hasty economic growth, but has an atrocious spread of wealth, causing half of the coast to still remain in poverty. In the first few panels of Aya of Yop City, we can see a old fashioned TV, and a group of people all staring into it. The group of people doesn't just include Aya's family, but also neighbouring people and friends.

The panel of the huge group of people looking at Aya's Father's Televison connects to the problem of the inequal wealth spread. Aya's father being a manager at a factory has much more wealth compared to the neighbouring people, meaning that he was able to afford the TV. The huge number of people all gawking at the televison shows a bigger picture of how little people in the Ivory Coast was able to afford luxuries.

In the first panel of Aya of Yop City, it is said that everyone that Aya's family is close with gathered around to see the country's first advertising campaign. This graphic novel is set during the 1970s-1980s, where national television has started to expand to have more regional stations. This is where television broadcasting across the country started to become more standardized.

Advertising started to become more localized and culturally relevant. Brands began to recognize the importance of connecting with the Nigerian audience through ads that resonated with their everyday experiences and aspirations.

On the second page, first panel, there is a wide shot of the entire group of people seeing the advertisement campaign for a local beer brand with a popular cyclist as the face of the campaign (page 1, panel 1).

This further shows that advertisements became more localized as it is an advertisement for a brand that people enjoy, with a celebrity that people love. Before the 1970s advertisements are simple, with voiceovers. The reason why her friends and family being excited to to see the advertisement is not only because that this is one of the first advertisement of this scale, it is culturally relevant and resonates to their household because of the reasons mentioned above. Additionally, Dago, the cyclist/celebrity in the advertisement, zooming pass a bus, can also symbolize that the people can be seen outside of their community, which resonates to its audience.

Starting from the last pair of panels on page 19, it is apparent that the westernized lifestyle and pursuit of fashion and wealth were embedded in the mindset of that young cohort in the Ivory Coast to which our protagonist belongs. The boy with a gang appearance in the plot invited Adjoua and Binton to a ride simply because he was rich, as evidenced by his sports car, and from their remarks and comments in the speech bubbles, as well as their decision to use that boy's money to purchase beverages. This plot evidently reflects the adolescents' longing for wealth while consciously taking advantage of others' money, thereby illustrating the wittiness of the women in that patriarchal society.

The emanata on the first page showing the TV and the ad on it that occupies the entire page, synchronizing with the narration introducing the relatively high social status of the protagonist's father, also showcases people's craving for fashionable lifestyle and substantive monetary gratification, as all friends and family members gathered around to watch a single advertisement that could not be engaging at all.

How are they telling you this through their authorial choices (basically authorial choices are anything that has an effect on the reader).

- Cause and effect relationship. An example in the text is climate change. This should be cohesive and coherent throughout the beginning and the end. e.g., “Generational Poverty and the severe class divide force the poor to repeatedly face uncontrollable hardship”

In his song “Alright,” Kendrick Lamar uses repetition to represent resistance against systemic racism and police violence. For example, when he repeats the line “We gon’ be alright,” the repetition suggests an insistence that survival and dignity can be maintained even in conditions designed to threaten Black life. This connects to the global issue of racism and violence because it transforms the hook into a steady form of resistance, emphasizing that hope is not naively optimistic but a response to violence occured.

In his song “alright”, Kendrick Lamar uses contrast to represent resistance against police brutality and racial segregation. For example, when he raps “And we hate Po-Po (police), wann shoot us dead in the street fo sho”, followed closely by the chorus: “we gon be alright”. Lamar contrasts the suffering of black Americans from police brutality to hope, spreading the belief that the situation of black Americans will improve, that despite the violence and segregation of their race, they’re able to remain hopeful. This connects to the global issue of police brutality because it ties to the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests at the time, where Black Americans rioted against police violence and racial segregation in modern day America.

In his song, Lamar uses repetition to represent resistance against racism and systemic discrimination. For example, when he raps "we're gonna be alright" at the finale of the performance before the eventual soliloquy and being shot down by the white police officer's "handgun" from the light pole, the technique suggest that the plausible motif of "Alright" and repeated reassurance of "we're gonna be alright" isn't true at all, but the exact opposite of being exerted upon police violence is the ultimate ending for African American individuals on the streets. This connects the global issue of racism as the reassurance contradicts the reality-reflecting visuals being played dramatically.

In his song “Alright,” Kendrick Lamar uses direct address towards the listener to represent resistance against racial discrimination. For Example, when he raps “ Wouldn't you know
We been hurt, been down before, When our pride was low, Lookin' at the world like, "Where do we go?” The technique of directly addressing the audience and using first person plural suggests that the lyrics accuses the white audience of being ignorant of the past “wouldn’t you know” and also connecting to black audience with the use of ‘we’ in the lyrics. This connects to the global issue of racial discrimination because of the use of the language in the lyrics.
