Prepare a lecture with identifiable chunks of information. Structure the chunks into 10–15 minute segments. The size of your class will impact how you might carry out this technique. The difficulty in larger classes is tied to determining how to randomly call on students. For smaller classes, students’ names may be placed in a box and randomly drawn for response. In larger classes, it may be necessary to devise a scheme for identifying a single student in a class of perhaps hundreds of students. Regardless, the most important preparation is to determine a system to select the number of the student who will reply. Prepare students by telling them about the activity before the class period so they can come to class prepared. Also, remind them at the beginning of class that you will randomly call on students. Inform students how they should respond when called on. For example, you might suggest that they could respond in one of three ways: (1) Ask a question, (2) make a comment on the material, or (3) make a connection to a real life experience.
