The way hate spread on from on person to another was completely unnecessary, I can't speak for the minds of the people within that era, but I believe that they lived in very hostile and biased times. Even though you have another race thriving and building a stable economy, there's no need to one-up them or knock them down. If they thrived side by side, they could've created new inventions and really bring in the fruits of the reconstruction era.
