My students are 10 years old: they use social media but sometimes they can't understand their correct use. It's very difficult to make them understand that social media can be used for negative purposes. I try to speak about it with them , but I think families have a great role: parents should supervise their children when they use social media or, more generally, the internet, so that they can intervene when noticing wrong behaviours.

Social media is an actual phenomenon, it should be studied by teachers in order to be prepared to talk about it with students. Unfortunately much of the information coming from social media is not true or unchecked and it can polarise or influence the opinion of our students. I honestly hope my students or any student for that matter wouldnt have to answer to chain messages on the internet. Never been confronted with such a case of spreading rumours but i guess nowadays everything is possible. I totally agree that the refugies' subject should come up more often in the classroom as to develop awareness about political situation as well as empathy for the fellow man.

As with any new technology in education, these changes come with problems as

well as advantages.

These new media forms come with distinctive features that

As a teacher I recognise the great impact that social media have on people in general and students in particular. All news flowing from social networks need to be understood and not misunderstood. As Alicia states in her video students are easily affected by rumors and phony news so they can indulge in prejudice when it comes to talk about migrants and refugees. All social media try to convince us that people escaping war zones or political problems in their countries are most of the times creating troubles to our economy , they are seen as trouble-makers or simply social burdens. We as teachers must be proactive and explain to students that this point of view is insulting, we should show them what is true and what is nothing but a big lie. It's up to us to spread positive thoughts about migrants and attract interest in their lives to fully understand their sufferings and appreciate their social value.

Social media as a tool of information for students. As Alicia says, it's a way to analyze deeply migrants' realities (loss of home, countries, family; poverty, fear, dangers), to promote intercultural understanding and universal principles on human rights. Students can also use social media to write their opinions, their impressions and to share all this with their peers, their friends or other people. In this way they can also discover as Alicia says some "hate speeches" done against foreign people in general. These speeches are full of prejudices, false opinions and xenophobic attitudes. This could be a good starting point to promote responsible behavior.

I think that Alicia refers to the media education. Through media education pupils should sort unreliable from reliable information. I realize that more time should be given in media education. I fact, they are designed in such a way to reduce control by any source. We should never ever condemn social media. The only thing we may do is to tell students that we also use them and we are all vulnerable and exposed to all kind of people in there, people that can also claim various debatable views and that they should be very careful with their “likes” and “friend requests” because this is their true power. We may also show them a practical example of a hoax, ask them without telling it is a hoax whether they believe it or not and then visit sites where such hoaxes are busted.

I really think that mass media can influence our students. The best thing we can do as teachers, is to help them to separate true information from fake information, and make them aware that they do not have to take for sure all things they hear and read. The social media are a crucial constituent when it comes to fostering social awareness, intercultural understanding as well as tolerance and respect in our students. Therefore, I teach my students to use the social media in a responsible way from an early age, e.g. by initiating an eTwinning project on digital citizenship. Furthermore, the very first step is to teach them the difference between facts and opinions, for which you can use social media examples (e.g. controversial tweets). Furthermore, I also provide them with a very simple checklist for checking the reliability of (online) sources: Which website is the text on? What do you know about that website? What information is given about the author (if at all)? When was the text written (is it dated)? Who is the text written for? Does the author give facts or opinions? Is the text trying to ‘sell’ something (in ANY respect)? Moreover, they know my mantra: You can only make informed decisions if you know how to obtain information effectively. ;)

Nowadays, how to do a correct use of social media should be taught very seriously. As a matter of fact, our youngsters find a word always connected but, at their age, they still have not the right competences to choose what is better to share with friends or the whole world - as social networks allow - and what is not. In last years, as a matter of fact, we are knowing new adolescence problems, once unknown, such as bullying and cyberbullying, because the new generation has not been trained in the use of these media, which could be very powerful both in a positive than in a negative way. I try to show my students, every time is possible, that the internet is a huge source of both right and wrong information and services. For instance, we did a lesson on how Google translator works, in order to understand that copying an entire text and make the tool translate it for you, has not a result that can make you have a good mark without any effort! The same can be done using Facebook groups, for example. Guided by teachers, they can explore discussions on the same topic from different points of view: official groups and free groups, for example. Only being correctly informed on how things works or could work can make them aware of what kind of powerful consequences every click has.

Among the other topics there’s one about nor believing everything on the Internet and social media because there are a lots of ‘bufale’ ,that’s how we call all the fake news in Italian. I’ll try to gather fakes information to show them how it works and then share the story of Malek and her journey from Syria to Greece as a real one because they can really find it on youtube and she is a real Syrian girl. There’s also a cartoon on her story and I think it would be useful with my primary school children. We should teach them to check the information they gather from contacts before forwarding anything serious.

We can analyze the same news described in the various newspapers and discover common and divergent points. They should choose the one they think is the truest one and explain why.
Show the same video to two different groups. They will have to report on the event. Compare the way each group presented.
Show similar images and distribute similar texts for students to match.

Of course, making students aware about the situation of newly arrived migrants is very important. Especially considering the overflow of information - mainly racist information - they are exposed to on TV and social networks every day. This is very urgent in Italy, where political parties have been using the issue of newly arrived migrants to drive public opinion.
As teachers, we should teach our students how to use social media in a responsible and positive way. A good way to do so is using social media in the teaching practice, fostering informed debate and truthful information.

Nowadays the role of social media is more important than ever. Information arrive from everywhere so rapidly without having the time to filter them. As a result we tend to act as passive recipients of different messages either true or false. Messages which formulate, many times if not always, the public opinion.
In my point of view, the key to those misleading perceptions is education. In particular teachers should be able to deal with such challenges except from their teaching role. In order to do this, they should first be in the position to discriminate the pretensions from the facts. Prerequisite for this is to get rid of any prejudice and stereotypes. If they do so, they can show students how to use social media in a positive way by understanding what is true or false, especially with regard to the topic of newly arrived migrants.
There are a lot of ways:
-reading online newspapers from different political parties (communist, liberal etc.) about a specific issue and comparing. In this way students will realise that there are a lot of different views for the same issue which depend on contradictory political interests.
Equivalent comparison could be done between foreign newspapers, if students can support other languages. As a result they will become aware of what is believed to the other countries about the same issue and how they deal with it.
-another way is providing pupils with specific addresses of sites about a special topic that we know they are valid and offer objective and real news.
-encouraging students to participate in educational projects online or not (e.g. moocs) , in order to discover themselves the "truth" by involving, for example, in forum discussions, facebook, twitter.
-teachers should also teach students the basic rules of a good and respective communication through classroom activities (dialogue, teamworks etc.) which feauture the patience, respect and the use of arguments. This way will help them to listen to their interlocuter and analyze his speech, whether it is true or false and formulate an opinion.
-fostering students to register a volunteering organisation (e.g. Red Cross, Unicef,etc.) and share their experiences into the classroom. By this way they will be able to have a more comprehensive opinion about refugees, for instance, and as a consequence they will not be vulnerable to false beliefs.
There are a lot of other ways, of course. The most important is the will to apply them.

Every day attending social networks I run into the unreal images where you see immigrants with cellular and well dressed and the words "for them the money is there, the Italians no!" or other similar phrases. In my ideal lesson I would start from these images to debunk the myths and let the students discuss these images that often share without thinking. As I teach in a Secondary Shool, my students are quite responsible and used to manage technology and the Internet in class for researches or activities.
The point is that technology is like “education”. The teacher should be prepared also to teach how to deal with “good” information and help students in selecting “correct” stuff.
Technology is a useful tool but sometimes it can be really dangerous. Students need to be taught in this field like if it were a new “Subject” at school.
Students should be prepared to use and reflect with it, reasoning and giving their own ideas without being influenced.

2.6 The role of social media

Nowadays it seems almost impossible not to think about the role of social media in our daily life; that's why we, as teachers, should learn first how to develop in the right way a good co-operation with social media, considering them as useful tools for our didactics. Once we have learned this, we could teach our students how to deal with these instruments which, in my opinion, are like big, enormous boxes full of every kind of news, some true and some not. To distinguish between true and false news, I think it's necessary to implement pupils' curiosity through readings, reflections, facts, people.. everything that can be checked from different sources of infos and news. They need to be taught to ask questions on a great variety of topics simply by introducing all the matters of discussion in a suitable didactics, which can become funny and interesting without losing its importance and real perception of things. Let's use Fb or Twitter or whatever social media we choose, but with the students and, why not, with their families too. Let's create Fb groups, for example, like the one we created for this course, and share ideas, infos, documents - everything that can touch positively the awareness of students on the present difficult historical period we live in.

I think that our work is make students capable to distinguish truth from fake news by working with this aim not just about migration topic but more often. At my school (8 yrs old my students we run a program called 'Safer Internet' with aid from a group of local social workers. As a teachers, we should be prepared to invest time on what is more relevant in our pupils lives, social media included, and help them orienteering in this everchanging word, by knowing very well what are the tricks of people spreading false news: what kind of language do they use, what kind of font, how can we explain the difference between the same news from one source and another; what is the connection between images and news, or news and headline, and try to build a new announcement with them, or to change the appearance of a photo, or its meaning (for instance, we can use the photo of the woman walking on Westminster bridge after the terrorist attack...). Social media is a tricky place there people can spread all kind of information that can influence and mobilize in a wrong way those who watch, read or listen these information. As a teacher, I have the duty to explain to my students that not everything that is on internet is true. My students have to take care which information they share because it is hard to remove it from virtual world once posted, that they have to critically read the news and that it’s not good to forward offensive messages just because a friend asked them to do this. These advices are available for not only refugee’s topic, which is most debated nowadays, but also for all the topics that affect our lives.

We may like or dislike social media but we cannot definitely deny their growing significance in shaping the opinions os people at all ages. It is particularly dangerous in the case of youngsters who are very subject to be influenced by peer groups that is why our duty is to teach the students the kind of code of behaviour on the Internet. I once mad a lesson about ethics of the real internet user and using the language of a teenagers , managed to convince a vast majority of them that for example it really is not in fashion to post and spread hatred on the Internet especially anonymously. When you drill in their minds that these aretacky and cowardly acts of the people who do not have any other ambitions or goals, they start thinking. (at least).
There are also the examples of a very good usage of social media to spread help, charity and ideas.

Social media are really strong instruments. They're not good or bad, obviously it depends on the use we made of them. This implies that we have to educate our students to the right use of social media.
They changed our lives: it is now clear how social media have brought to the so called Arab Spring, which made many dictatorships collapsed in northern Africa and Middle East. But as many colleagues have already told they could also speard xenophobia, racism and social threats. We have to let our students understand that it is really important to know if something we read it is a real fact, a fake news or just an opinion, before they click the "share" button. We should speak about netiquette and how to behave online; to educate to online safety. If we publish something we will not be able to stop it anymore. We could point the main websites that offer verified news or show how many news usually regarded as true are false instead (for example some fake news are share to spread racism and social hate).

We are living in a society with rapid technological improvement, as Alicia mentioned at the video. Social media can be used effectively when it comes to the topic of newly arrived migrants, when for example we publish useful contact telephone numbers, or websites that will help migrant students learn about their rights and responsibilities, about the country they are living now or about humanitarian events realized for them. They have to be educated not to trust all websites or all information shared via social media.

Nowadays, kids start using the social media in an early age and parents/ teachers should always keep an eye on them and teach them how to understand what is real and what is fake as they can be easily influenced. Another issue is that students should be careful not to offend and be rude to their classmates who come from other countries esp. on FB and other social media where what goes social, stays social (scripta manent). Finally, adults should be a positive model for minors by being polite and respecting all the migrants.

It would be a wonderfull world if the social media were used for the good of the humanity and the nations. Unfortunately, this does'nt happens. So, the school has the crucial role to develop the critical thinking of the children to understand what is fake and what is true. This would support the development of their relationships with the migrants and remove the xenophobia. One crucial think is the presentation of small tv news for the migrants and the development of the conversation about the emotions they provoke.

It is very important to teach kids to be critical about what they read in Facebook, Whattsup and on the internet. They need to realize that everything you read is not true and that the writer always has an agenda. That said, the social media doesn't have to be a bad thing. You can for example get in touch with refugees and let them tell their stories and you can organize helping networks.

There are pros and cons of using social media. You should give more information to the students about their use. Not everything they see and read is true. Very useful are facebook or watsapp to keep contacts, for example with the refugees, to know their stories.
