I would find out his likes and dislikes.. Try and learn what we have in common as well as what he has in common with other students so that I could pair him up with a supportive peer. I would use positive reinforcements to try and promote learning and give positive feedback to motivate him.

He may feel like his family doesn’t care if he succeeds or not, so why bother even trying?
