         <description><![CDATA[<div>Even as early as the 1930s Joseph Ritter was a champion for the rights of African Americans. He desegregated the Catholic Schools in Indianapolis in 1938. Upon his appointment as the Archbishop of St. Louis in 1946, Joseph Ritter almost immediately began desegregating Catholic schools. Joseph Ritter desegregated 5 schools in 1947.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Two huge court cases that had a major effect on segregation were Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education. Plessy v. Ferguson was the original Supreme Court case that said that it was legal to separate whites and African Americans based on race as long as both groups had access to the same quality of services. This court case was decided in 1896 and wasn't changed until 1954 with the court case of Brown v. Board of Education. Until 1954, many African American children were raised going to separate schools and drinking from separate water fountains</div>]]></description>

In Indianapolis, Joseph Ritter desegregated schools 18 years before the Brown v. Board of Education case. Cardinal Joseph Ritter was a man dedicated to making the world a better and more free place.</div>]]></description>
