World War 1 was a brutal war fought in trench war fair, mustard gas, tanks, heavy machine guns, and planes. It was easily one of the most brutal wars ever fought because of the high defensive tactics. Trench warfare was when you built a trench with machine guns and waited for the enemy troops to try and rush you inwhich you would gun them all down. But because both sides were trying to use trench warfare a lot of blood was shed as you can imagine. One of the most brutal battles was the Western Front because of its vast use of trench warfare.

Wilson's 14 points were part of the Treaty of Versailles by being another proposed step toward peace.

One of the biggest reasons he failed, was that he only brought his plan to the attention of Democrats when he was making them. There was no opinion that strayed too far from his to say what could be changed or improved on. The League of Nations didn't exactly give his 14 points a chance because he couldn't even convince his own Congress.

Wilson didn't agree with the way his ideas were incorporated in the Treaty of Versailles in the sense that there would be no backlash on Germany. This played a big part in the US no longer being involved in wars.

Kaitlyn Cooper
Anna Etterling

Before WWI, the federal government was not very influential when it came to the daily lives of American citizens. However, when the war did happen, the government assumed new powers, such as regulating agricultural and industrial production, shaping public opinion, and establishing new military draft. Sacrifice is a common part of war, but all of the opportunities brought on because of it that caused Americans to move all over the country changed the relationship between citizens and government officials forever.

The war began during the Progressive Era, a time where efficiency was key. Because of this, the states and federal government came together in order to make their power stronger in every aspect. There were many temporary agencies that brought the economy and society to maximum production in order to produce supplies such as weapons and food, and ideas and beliefs in order to motivate the people. Government propaganda, the military draft, munitions, media, and the general populace of America caused WWI to be so influential.

Since during WWI the United States Army was a fraction of the size of several European armies, Selective Service was very helpful in making us stronger. Of course, there were young men that feared going to war and tried to avoid the draft at all costs. These men were called conscientious objectors, as they refused to perform military service. However, they were surrounded by government propaganda, constantly being encouraged to go to war and putting down the Germans. The media always tried to shape the public to see a certain way.

Since the U.S. became so involved in the war, discrimination was highly focused upon German Americans, as they were forced to prove their loyalty to America. Many things that were from Germany were called different things in America. People stopped playing German music and teaching the language.

Because of the Progressive Era’s constant efficiency, munitions and food were being made very well and very fast for our army. As this continued, our economy was boosted very much so. Along with that, since several of our men were fighting overseas, the women of America were working for peace and their rights. Even African and Mexican Americans decided to move North in order to find new opportunities and better lives.

(Roberts, Levy, Lapsansky-Werner, Taylor, "US American History: Reconstruction to the Present," 2008)
