There has been progress over the last decades: more girls are going to school, fewer girls are forced into early marriage, more women are serving in Parliament and positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality. 

Despite these gains, many challenges remain: women continue to be underrepresented at all levels of political leadership, and one in five women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 report experiencing physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner within a 12-month period.

"Women’s History Month" began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma Country (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of the 8th of March to correspond with "International Women’s Day". The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own "Women’s History Week" celebrations the following year. In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians successfully lobbied for national recognition. Subsequent Presidents continued to proclaim a "National Women’s History Week" in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.”
