This adaptation helps them blend into their surrounding especially when they are in the water. Their black backs help them when an animals is looking down and is over them. Then their white bellies help if an animals is looking up and is below the penguin. It relates to the quote because their genes have adapted to the colors of black and white. Then the penguins that didn't adapt were easier for the predators to spot and eat them.
