by Mamta Nainy and illustrated by Siddhartha Tripathi

This book is about a young boy and his friendship with the moon. One day he notices that the moon is looking thinner than usual and decides to help out.

This text can be used as a teacher read aloud followed by comprehension activities or for discussions about the moon.

I chose this text because it can serve as a window for Himalayan culture while also speaking to the moon phases that we are studying in this unit.

This is an excellent book to talk about the shift from autumn to winter and how the days become shorter and the nights become longer. It can be used to talk about the patterns of the sun and moon as the Earth makes its revolution around the sun.

I selected this text as a multicultural/diverse resource because it represents brown-skinned children and follows a brother and sister sibling pair, an idea a lot of my students could relate to.

We can talk about the how the Earth rotates around the sun and why is it hotter in summer months (in some places) and colder during the winter? As we explore the predictable patterns of the sun, moon, and stars, it is also important to study important historical figures that have helped to expand our understanding of space and the world around us.

This text can be used to excite students about the night time sky. It is a story about a Hawaiian myth about the goddess Hina, mother of the Hawaiian people. We can read this text and compare it to another myth about the moon and stars, or to what the students currently know about the moon and stars. We can talk about what myths are and the elements of what makes it a myth. It would be mostly used to focus on an ELA and ELD standard rather than the science content standard since the story is a myth.

I selected this story because I would love to create opportunities for students to interact with different types of stories from other cultures. It can also act as a mirror or window to my students.
