This was a memory that i wish to take a picture of because it as almost the end time of the subway station with very little amount of people around and it was quite dark and i saw a flower dumped in a trash bin. It was very memorable and interesting to me because earlier this morning i saw a place seeling the exact flower.

Next time I would add more details to the drawing with more fun coloring, I would like to change a setting more wide, and the point of view is a mess, I would try and make the point of view more clearer and change the mood a bit more.

Next time i would like to use different sets of colors and I was short on time so I want to add more patterns.

Our team's communication improved we helped each other to tape when we need additional foundation, to make the sculpture stable. I was surprised by the finial work because on our first day we ended in 4 line of tape and we didn;t even understand how the foundation and pose work. However today we ended out in full foundation and we could see the pose clearly. We struggled when the tapes wher short, not tight enough but we managed it.

The hardest thing was finding the accurate ratio of the body, as you can see in the picture some legs were cut off. I think the first one because the lines are clean and I like it. I think i need to observe more from the picture before i draw next time.

The grid system helped me keep the proportions more accurate because I could focus on one small section at a time instead of the whole picture. It was easier to line things up and make sure shapes and angles were correct. It was easier to place objects and details in the right spots since I could compare them within each square. However, shading and making the drawing look realistic were still challenging because the grid mainly helped with structure, not details.I could use the grid method when drawing something complex to get the proportions right before adding details. Even if I don’t use a full grid, I might lightly divide the page or use reference points to guide accuracy in future drawings.

Exploring a variety of materials while experimenting helped me expand my overall vision by allowing me to understand how different mediums could express emotion and movement in unique ways. During my research day, I discovered Eom Yu Jeong, a Korean artist whose distinctive style initially inspired me to explore new textures and techniques. Although I didn’t receive a response from her after reaching out, I found another artist, Morag Caister, whose work focuses on gesture, detailed contouring, and blind contour drawing. Experimenting with these techniques encouraged me to think more deeply about the expressive qualities of line and form, which ultimately influenced the direction and visual language of my summative project.

In my brainstorming sketches, I created variety by experimenting with different materials like oil pastels, markers, and watercolor. I was inspired by Morag Caister’s use of oil paint, so I explored a similar textured effect using oil pastels, especially through blind contour drawing of objects. While the subject matter observational sketches of object stayed the same, the media and stylistic outcomes changed significantly. I found that watercolor produced vibrant, fluid colors that I really enjoyed and want to explore more in this project. This led me to think about how different materials affect the mood and style of a piece, and I’m now questioning how to best layer or combine watercolor and oil pastel effectively, and whether to begin with line work or color in my process.

For my project, I drew my friend using pencil and colored pencils because these materials let me create detailed shading and smooth blending, which helped capture their features realistically. Throughout the process, I revised the proportions of the face and adjusted the shading to improve the overall balance and depth. These changes taught me how important light and shadow are for creating realism, and they influenced my final decisions by encouraging me to focus more on contrast and detail to make the portrait feel more lifelike.

Today, I started painting details on my artwork using watercolor and focused on adding more shadows to create depth. The process was challenging because it was difficult to control the skin tones due to the limited color range in the concentrated watercolor set. I noticed that the face ended up looking more cool-toned while the body appeared warm-toned, which made the overall piece look uneven. Next class, I plan to adjust the colors to create a more consistent skin tone and continue refining the details to make the painting look more balanced and realistic.

My artwork is a portrait of my friend Ehyun, I created to capture her personality through a mix of blind contour, detail contour and watercolor painting. The meaning behind my work is to express the warmth and individuality of a person close to me, showing how personal connections can be represented with colors. I was inspired by morag caister who use soft color transitions to bring emotion into their work. I can see that most of her drawing shows comfort for me. I really like the drawings with a orange sofa with people lying down in a comfortable posture. Throughout my process, I began with a pencil sketch to plan proportions and details, then used watercolor to add color and the mood. However, it was challenging to balance the skin tones.

And I added more pinky on the face because she looked kinda sick. I really like how it turned out because I wnated to do the pattern all around the background but I feel like it would be too much so I placed it around with distance. Overall, I really like it.

In my low angle drawing, I used tall vertical lines and stretched shapes to make the buildings look like they are towering above the viewer. The bottoms of the buildings are wider and the tops get smaller, which helps create depth. This design has a strong focus on the main building in the center and uses contrast and proportion to make it stand out.

In my high angle drawing, the lines angle downward and the shapes become smaller as they move away, making it look like the viewer is looking from above. Overlapping buildings and shrinking sizes help create the illusion of depth. The repeating shapes of windows and rooftops create rhythm and movement in the design.

In my frontal drawing, the lines are more straight and even, making the buildings look stable and calm. Depth is shown through the diagonal road and overlapping buildings. This design feels more balanced and clear, but I would choose the low-angle drawing to present because it looks the most dramatic and shows the strongest sense of depth and perspective.

My idea has become clearer since day 1 because drawing the different viewpoints helped me understand the shape and layout of the stacked houses better. I didn’t expect some of the angles, like the high view, to make the design look more interesting, but I also found it challenging to keep the sizes and details the same in each sketch. I plan to fix this by taking more time with proportions and maybe using simple guides. For extra materials, I might need a ruler for straighter lines, pens for cleaner outlines, and colored pencils to help separate the buildings and make the drawing easier to understand.

For this still life drawing, I focused on the pumpkin, apple, and skull to create a strong sense of form and depth. I started by lightly sketching the basic shapes, then blocked in the large shadow areas to separate the light side from the dark side. By squinting, I was able to clearly see the value family, light tints on the top of the pumpkin and apple, midtones along the curved surfaces, and darker shadows under the objects and inside the skull. I used blocking and smooth shading to build volume, especially around the round forms, to make them look more three dimensional.

I chose my still life of the wooden hand holding a red apple with a knife because the strong lighting creates bold shadows and highlights. The image tells a story of contrast and tension between the smooth apple and the wooden hand. I started my sketch by squinting and blocking in the large shadow shapes first. I identified the value families as light tints in the background, midtones on the hand and apple, and dark shadows underneath. So far, I’ve used blocking and shading techniques, but I forgot to take a photo of my progress.

In this pumpkin drawing, I focused on showing strong contrast and form. I began by lightly sketching the overall shape, then blocked in the darkest shadow areas first to separate light from dark. By squinting, I could clearly see the value families: the highlights on the top and front of the pumpkin, the midtones along the curved sections, and the deep shadows between the ridges and underneath. I used blocking and layered shading to create smooth transitions and make the pumpkin look round and three-dimensional.

I chose this photo of the sculpture resting on a mannequin's hand with a fork because it has strong lighting and interesting contrast between smooth, organic shapes and hard, artificial ones. For my initial sketch, I will start by squinting to see the large value shapes, then block in the basic forms before adding details. I used different types of shading techniques. As you can see in the picture I tried to use different technique for example, I used cross hatching with one of the fingers and I used one random lines with the sculpture and used blending with the fork.

This photo captures my chapter about shadows because it shows both shadow and reflection in one image. The cardboard buildings create shadows underneath them, and the shiny surface also reflects the buildings, which makes a second image below them. The reflection looks slightly distorted compared to the real objects, which shows how light and surfaces affect reflections. I also like how the crumpled paper around the buildings creates extra shadows and texture. This photo best represents my chapter because it clearly shows how light interacts with objects to create shadows and reflections in interesting ways.

It is connected to ideas of self-expression and personal style, showing how art can be used in everyday life. Seeing your work inspired me to think about different forms of art and how creativity can be shown through beauty and design.

Thank you for sharing your hand for me to work on it.

Your detailed drawing of the city on a tall stacked island immediately caught my eye.

I enjoyed your pencil linework. The reflection in the water adds a beautiful sense of balance too.

Your work made me think deeply about community and connection, it made it so much easier to visualize and engage with your vision.

I am truly inspired by how you used simple materials to create such a detailed, imaginative scene. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us, and I look forward to seeing your future work!

Sincerely,

Hyunjin

This artwork is a colourful collection of different flowers arranged together to create a balanced composition. I used a variety of flower shapes, sizes, colours, and textures to make the artwork visually interesting. The different flowers create contrast and help draw the viewer’s attention to different areas of the piece.

Even though many types of flowers are included, there is unity because they are grouped closely together and connected through soft colour blending and repeated floral forms. I used emphasis by placing the large lily in the centre, making it the focal point of the artwork. The surrounding flowers guide the viewer’s eye towards this central flower. I also used color theory, using the opposite color to sketch and coloring the orginal color on top.

This artwork represents different parts of my personality, experiences, and memories. Each flower is unique, symbolising how every experience in my life has shaped who I am today. Some flowers are bright and bold, representing happy moments, confidence, and growth, while the softer flowers represent calmness, comfort, and the people who support me.

The flowers are grouped together to show how different emotions, memories, and experiences can exist at the same time and still create something beautiful. The use of many colours reflects the different moods and stages of life that I have gone through. By bringing all the flowers together into one arrangement, I wanted to show that even though people and experiences are different, they can come together to create a harmony.
