Introduction

Hi, there! I'm Loureanne Halasan, a sophomore in BS Psychology. What I like about Philippine pop culture is the arts. Be it Filipino movies or newspaper comics. I particularly like the indie film "Kita kita". The comics at the back of Manila Bulletin newspapers also really inspired me. It led me to draw short comics at the back of my notebooks and my classmates seemed to really enjoy it. I also really appreciate OPM and a few other soap operas. I think OPM holds a special place in my heart as it is very nostalgic. Soap operas, on the other hand, are starting to grow on me. Recently, I've really enjoyed "Legal wives" and "Maria Clara at Ibarra". It's very informative and at the same time, entertaining. I also appreciate morning tv shows like "Unang Hirit" and "Umagang kay ganda". It probably stems from the fact that my mother and grandmother enjoy watching them that I've also gotten used to it.

OPM just has that certain sweet spot for me. Every time I feel the music, it takes me back home. The lyrics resonate with a lot of people and it feels like I'm also learning about their demographic when I focus on the meaning of the lyrics. I really appreciate the fact that a lot of Filipino artists use deep Filipino words in their songs. It makes me curious as to what it means and it just makes the feeling sink deeper to my heart.

OPM Analysis

The use of semiotics can be observed in OPM, particularly in the selection and crafting of its lyrics. The lyrics employed in OPM songs are carefully chosen, reflecting a deliberate use of symbols, signs, and meanings to convey messages and evoke emotions. In the realm of semiotics, the lyrics in OPM songs can be considered signifiers, as they represent a tangible form of communication. These signifiers are constructed through the careful arrangement of words, metaphors, and poetic devices. You can hear how a lot of pieces tell a story as such that it becomes quite poetical. Each word and phrase carries not only its literal meaning but also cultural connotations and associations, adding layers of significance to the overall message conveyed.

OPM is like a breathe of fresh air. It connects a lot of people despite the fact that it's not that hippy. Teens can bond over their choice of music with their parents now. It can be seen that a lot of people are tracing back the roots of music since I very often hear classics playing on a cellphone. Artists like Ben&Ben, Juan Karlos Labajo, and Zack Tabudlo are examples of what I hear on my mom's phone. Heck, even our neighbors blast their songs on speaker and our street is filled with mostly late adults. So, yeah. People somehow meet in the middle when it comes to OPM.
