When applying it to programs, a developmental perspective refers to the consideration of the stage of the program. More specifically, as a program is developed, there are difference focus needs and things to monitor. Taking a developmental perspective mean that you consider where the program is in development and assess certain activities, outputs, and/or outcomes related to that stage. This would also likely impact what stakeholders are interested in and what to be reporting out on. Programs are ever evolving (hopefully) and it's important to consider this evolution in program evaluation.

It helps us understand the program's potential impact, helps clinician's and researchers make informed decisions, and improves client outcomes. The two major types of evaluation in program evaluation are formative evaluation and summative evaluation.

It involves ongoing reflection which could lead to better outcomes. Paying attention to the changes of the program, allows for flexibility when things need to be adjusted or changed. Program developers should be mindful of stakeholders wants and needs. Additionally, a culturally informed lens should always be used. Lastly, since the program is being analyzed overtime, it allows for trial and errors to see which method works best, making for more effective outcomes.

It allows for flexibility and growth to improve the process and outcomes for all parties involved. It is a way to perform ROM for the program itself, just as we do for our clients, and adapt the program as needed to improve outcomes. Programs are influenced by many factors that are constantly evolving (e.g., people, society, norms, culture, needs), and a developmental perspective allows for an adaptive program that grows with the stakeholders and context of the times to ensure its effectiveness and utility.

Programs are made to reach a target audience based on their needs, which may change as the program develops. Individuals and groups are changing together, influenced by societal changes and needs, but they may need to continue developing in order to address current needs. A developmental approach focuses on where people/clients are in that specific moment of their clinical needs and using the appropriate program intervention to address that. Having a program that follows these needs is critical for positive outcomes, using a cultural lens along with a clinical one when using this approach.

I will continue to explore this work in my future work and continuously look at the feasibility, utility, and components of an effective program. There are a lot of quality improvement frameworks and methods for different types of care, understanding how they may be used in your own patient population and evaluating which ones may be working and which ones are not is always a crucial step. Understanding and evaluating outcomes is just as criticial as the clinical work itself.

My current understanding of evaluation in psychology is rooted in recognizing the critical importance of examining why we, as providers, deliver care in the ways that we do. The broader field of healthcare relies heavily on evidence-based protocols, and while psychology may differ from the traditional medical model, it is essential that we also ground our interventions in evidence-based practices. Regardless of the setting, our clinical decisions should be informed by established research, theoretical frameworks, and sound clinical judgment.

Evaluation serves as a vital tool to determine whether the interventions we use are truly beneficial and effective for our clients. It not only measures outcomes but also allows for ongoing feedback, correction, and refinement of our approaches. Through systematic evaluation, we ensure that our care remains responsive, ethical, and tailored to the unique needs of each individual. In this way, evaluation provides a pathway for continuous improvement and greater accountability within our field, ultimately enhancing the quality of psychological services we provide.

Adopting a developmental perspective in evaluation positions programs to remain flexible and responsive in the face of complexity and change. This approach supports continuous adaptation by integrating real-time feedback and ongoing learning throughout the program’s evolution. Developmental evaluation involves formulating evaluative questions, applying systematic reasoning, and collecting and sharing relevant data to inform decision-making as the program unfolds. This method enables evaluators and program developers to think and act strategically, making informed adjustments in response to emerging challenges and opportunities.

By embedding evaluation into the developmental process, teams are empowered to learn from their experiences and immediately implement those insights.

I see evaluation as an integral component of bettering psychology as a field and practice. Just as with research, society is continuously changing and thus, evaluation of programs and processes need to occur simultaneously to meet such needs. It provides data on whether current programs and processes are effective and if they need to be restructured in any way.

After this class, I now recognize the importance of program evaluation in our field. While I always understood to some extent that evaluation was needed in psychology, I now feel as though I have a more comprehensive understanding of how some kind of evaluation is needed in every context. Program evaluation allows us to gather information related to the design, implementation and outcomes of interventions, a critical piece to ensure we are serving our clients in the most inclusive way possible. I now find myself thinking deeper about the programs that I work for, often regarding how the program could improve overall efficacy, if it is truly achieving its goals, and how to best tailor the program in a way that meets the unique needs of all the individuals it serves.

A developmental perspective when applied to program evaluation refers to considering the current stage the program is in and understanding how a program evolves over time. Rather than focusing on fixed outcomes, a developmental perspective recognizes that programs can grow and adapt, potentially changing due to new information, changing environments, or new emerging needs. In this approach, one should focus on the program's progression through activities, outputs, and outcomes.

This is important to consider when evaluation programs, especially in the early stages, in order to foster improvement and innovation. By acknowledging that programs are constantly changing and evolving, this allows evaluators and stakeholders to make more information adjustments, leading to more responsive and effective interventions.

As I understand program evaluation, programs can be evaluated in a real world setting or in a laboratory setting. Either way the evaluation would evaluate the merits of a program or effectiveness of intervention based of questions the evaluation was conducted to answer.

I suppose a developmental looks at a program starting before implementation to assess to evaluate the needs and to formulate goals and objectives. Followed by implementation, which would include documenting the processes and evaluating effectiveness and acceptability. In addition, outcomes including short-term and long-term effectiveness and impact on the stakeholders. The outcomes and impact on stakeholders would then be evaluated so the program can be modified or improved to better meet the needs of the stakeholders and become more effective. This an important consideration because it accounts for the changes in population or culture over the lifetime of the program and the evaluation.

Program evaluation in psychology involves applying different research methodologies and techniques to determine whether programs are meeting their intended goals. Although not all forms of program evaluation are considered to be "research," it is still important that program evaluations follow the American Psychological Association (APA) and American Evaluation Association (AEA) ethics codes, especially when the evaluation being conducted is not considered to be research. In program evaluation, it is important to consider who the stakeholders are, the needs of all stakeholders, whether the stakeholder's goals for the program evaluation align with what a program evaluator can offer, and how the data being collected will be used (and by whom). Additionally, Logic Models are helpful visual tools that are often used in program evaluation and can help outline a program's inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes.

A developmental perspective in program evaluation occurs when program evaluators conduct their program evaluation in-concert with the program's service delivery. This allows program evaluators to collect and analyze data in real-time, so that the organization can use said data to make program enhancements and updates while services are actively being delivered to clients. This approach is particularly useful in the earlier stages of program implementation, especially when programs are still aiming to develop and refine their goals or method of service delivery. This perspective is also useful because it allows evaluators and stakeholders to make informed decisions based on current data and program feedback.

I would describe program evaluation as the process of expanding on observed limitations of an already existing program. Program evaluation is essential in ensuring that all parties benefit from a newly revised program, including clients and stakeholders alike. Not only is it essential for the creation or improvement of a program, it is also essential in identifying if a program is needed in the first place, or continues to be needed, in order to ensure resources are going to the right place.

A developmental perspective when applied to programs is a very tailored approach that takes into account different stages of a program and the changes likely to be necessary as time changes. Important things to consider when implementing this approach are deciding whether the program is still needed, ensuring that it remains inclusive to the target population, ensuring the program continues to have benefits, etc.
