This is a type of federal student loan. These loans come in two different for subsidized and unsubsidized. In a subsidized loan the government pays off the interest while you are in school but this interest rate is slightly higher than an unsubsidized loan. Then an unsubsidized loan is where the government does not pay off the interest while you are in school but, the interest rate is slightly lower than the subsidized. Like any government student loan this is need based and granted to students who have families with low income.

This is another form of government loan that is 100% subsidized and the interest rate is typically about 5% and is more desirable for students, however, the qualifications of such a loan are much more stringent. These loans are also distributed to schools who decide which students get to take advantage of these loans.

These loans work much more like a personal loan than a student loan and you receive money and interest based on your credit and they are not subsidized. Also the interest rates are typically higher than government loans.
