During the time of the "new world" the puritans were one of the first English men from England who came to this new found land in search of religious freedom. They had many religious laws all about having self hatred and to always be repenting because we as humans were born as "sinners". They believed that the catholic church wasn't "strict" enough and that it didn't align. They also had their beliefs on women being involved in anyway in their social community. Women were only to be seen and their opinion really didn't give a factor in anyway.

Start of the witch hunt.

Even starting in England witchcraft was seen as normal thing that many people practiced, but to the puritans it was straight works from the devil. The puritans believed that the devil would recruit people to be their "workers". they believed that people who practiced witchcraft had many different signs of them acting in a strange way. Going back into Salem where two young girls were seen as acting strange. The doctor in this small settlement gave them a perfect bill of health except it had seen as they had come down as witches inflicted by the devil's work.

Who was targeted

While the girls in the small settlement were accused of being witches they tried very hard to take the blame off of them saying that someone had inflicted them with this devil's work. First they accused a slave who lived in the house with one of the girls who was accused of being witches. As hysteria spread the group of girls grew. They targeted people who were non-church goers, people who were on the outskirts of their small society. While the women would plead their case the girls in court would try and convince them with heartbreaking testimonies screaming and crying out.

McCarthyism

Relating to theses times back into a time where it was the same ideals but a different format. During the 1940-1950 america went through its owns witch's trails. accusing many big picture people not as witches but as a "Communist". When accused it got many people fired and blacklisted from not only life but every field that they were in. It didn't matter if they were a communist or had ideals or from the farthest picture from a communist. Once something was said even to be referred as a communist there was no way other wise.

Signs of a witch

To the puritans there were many signs of how you could "tell" of someone is a witch. They would show off the people inside the court looking for a mark or even going as far as saying if they sank they were pure. Which didn't even make sense at times. These many "tests" were preformed but the real evidence that they believed was the testimonies from the accused and the accusers. When one word was said by the accused the girls who were used as evidence would cry out and say that the spirit of the witches were attracting them right there in court.
